Hagar Records Runner-Up Result During Opening Night of Short Track Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 10, 2018) – Last weekend was a tale of two drastically different results for Derek Hagar during the 31st annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals at I-30 Speedway.

Hagar drew a high number during the pill draw each night to open the ASCS Mid-South Region show. On Friday he rallied from seventh to second place in a heat race before charging from fifth to second place in a qualifier. That ranked him second in overall points out of more than 80 competitors and lined him up on the outside of the front row for the main event.

“It was a good night,” he said. “We had a good run in the heat race despite starting so far back. It surprised me. We drove around Sammy (Swindell) before his issue happened a couple of laps later. I knew then we had a great car. Then we had a good run in the qualifier.

“We made a bid for the lead a couple of times in the feature. There were times we were better than Sam (Hafertepe Jr.). We just couldn’t make it stick. Every time we’d get to traffic the caution would come out. I was happy with our result. It’d be nice to win it, but finishing second to Sam and ahead of Tim Crawley was a great finish. There were a lot of good cars sitting in the pits.”

Hagar earned a runner-up result, which was his 23rd top five of the season.

Unfortunately, a high pill draw on Saturday hurt Hagar’s chances. He advanced from ninth to seventh place in a heat race, but that didn’t earn enough points to make a qualifier. Hagar won a C Main after starting third and he powered from 15th to seventh place in a B Main, but that was four positions shy of transferring into the main event.

“We were in the first heat with no passing and when you have 70-plus cars at the track that puts you behind the eight ball,” he said. “We just had to keep digging. We had a good car, but once you set yourself up for a deal like that it’s hard to climb out of it, especially with the way the competition is.”

Hagar will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., with the USCS Series.
