Hagar Wins Ralph Henson Memorial for Second Time in Three Years

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 18, 2018) – Derek Hagar earned his sixth triumph of the season last Saturday at I-30 Speedway, where he captured the Ralph Henson Memorial for the second time in his career.

Hagar kicked off the ASCS Mid-South Region and ASCS Red River Region event by maneuvering from seventh to third place during a heat race, which ranked him fourth in overall points out of nearly 40 competitors.

Hagar made the redraw and he pulled the No. 1 to start the dash on the pole. He won that race to garner the pole position for the A Main.

“They also did a past champions dash,” he said. “It was a dirty draw where you drew a car and had to pass it off to another guy. I didn’t have any friends so I had to start sixth. We got to third in six laps though. We had a fast car.”

Hagar continued his strong performance in the main event.

“We had a really good car all night,” he said. “The track slicked off real good. We got a good start and the car felt good the whole race. We made some wing adjustments as the race went on and the track went away. I felt really comfortable in the car.”

A couple of cautions bunched the field up, but Hagar had no problem as he led the distance to pick up the win. He became only the second driver to garner multiple feature wins during the Ralph Henson Memorial.

“On the first restart Howard Moore tried to slide me, but he didn’t have enough momentum to get by me,” he said. “After that we didn’t really have any bids for the lead. I was being cautious trying not to use my tires up. Every time we got to traffic we had a caution so we almost always had a clean track.

“I want to give a special shout out to Bruce Griffith for putting an extra $500 on top of the feature winnings to make it $2,500 to win.”

Hagar will take momentum from his win, which was his 11 podium finish in his last 12 races, into the 8th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. He has earned at least one top 10 during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com event each year since 2012 and he was victorious in 2014.
