Masse Scores First Career Top-Five Finish With ASCS Frontier Region

Inside Line Promotions – BELGRADE, Mont. (Aug. 7, 2018) – Cody Masse charged to his first career top-five finish with the ASCS Frontier Region Friday night at Gallatin Speedway.

“It was pretty special to finally get my first top five in a 360 sprint car,” he said. “I’ve had three sixth-place finishes before so it was nice to finally break through to the top five.”

Masse’s night began with a fifth-place starting spot in his heat race.

“I thought I would probably need to finish third to make the redraw, which is always my goal in the heat race,” he said. “I got to fourth on the start and then was able to move to third by the finish. The top eight in points qualify for the redraw and I just made it in eighth. I also drew the eighth starting spot for the feature.”

Masse looked to get a good start at the beginning of the feature, but it didn’t materialize.

“I thought there would be a lot of grip on the top like there usually is, but it wasn’t there this time,” he said. “I tried to get down to the bottom, but I kept getting pushed back to the top. I dropped to 11th by the time the first caution came.

“I was pretty upset with myself. I had put myself in a pretty good spot at the start of the race, but had already given that up. I just kind of reset and told myself that now I could run the line I wanted and pick them off one at a time. And that’s what happened. I got a great restart and the car was fantastic. It was rolling the bottom well and it had drive off the corners. I was up to seventh by the next caution and then we had another quick run and I had moved to fifth.”

Masse continued to push toward the front.

“I had a great battle with Kory Wermling for fourth before eventually settling into fifth since I didn’t want to junk a car racing for fourth,” he said. “I was already in a good points position since three cars that were close to me in points were taken out in an accident.

“I knew Trever Kirkland would be charging from the back and eventually he passed me, but I was able to get a huge run off of turn four with two laps to go and get back by him to finish fifth.”

Masse is especially thankful for the help of his crew, particularly with the number of miles they’ve logged recently.

“I want to thank Ken Allen, Ron Krausher, Ann Allen, George Masse and Murray Vickers for their hard work over the last few weeks,” he said. “They’ve taken time off work to travel in addition to being dedicated crew members during the week.”

This weekend the team will have one of its shortest distances of the year to travel to a race track when they will haul three hours to Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont., for an ASCS Frontier Region doubleheader on Friday and Saturday.

“We’re looking forward to just a three-hour drive to Great Falls, which I kind of consider my home track since it’s so close,” Masse said. “It will be a refreshing drive after the hauls we’ve made recently.”
