Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (Nov. 28, 2017) – Joshua Shipley finished his first full season competing with the ASCS Southwest Region last weekend at Arizona Speedway during the Copper Classic.

Results of ninth and 12th, respectively, propelled him and the Verville Motorsports team onto the podium in the championship standings with a third-place finish in the ASCS Southwest Region. Shipley was also named Rookie of the Year.

“On Night 1 we started off really fast,” he said. “We were fourth fastest in practice, but I drew the high pill for qualifying and we went out last.”

Qualifying only determined where drivers started in a heat race and then it went back to the normal ASCS passing points format for the remainder of each night. Shipley started third in his heat race and finished second.

“I took the lead for a lap and I knew that I needed to get to the top,” he said. “I decided to stay where I was for one more corner to protect and sure enough I got passed.”

Shipley scored enough points to advance into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 3 to start the A Main third. Although his front wing broke halfway through the race, Shipley was able to stay inside the top 10 and garner a ninth-place finish.

“I drew the first pill for qualifying on Saturday,” he said. “The track wasn’t there yet when our group went out and I qualified 19th, which wasn’t great.”

Shipley started fifth in his heat race and gained a position to place fourth. He then advanced from 17th to 12th in the main event.

“We really struggled at the beginning of the season,” Shipley said. “I’m so proud of our team for never giving up and ending off the year with good hard races.”
