Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 18, 2017) – A promising start to the Short Track Nationals ended in a hard crash on Saturday night for Marshall Skinner.

The 30th edition of the ASCS Mid-South Region event at I-30 Speedway got off to a solid start for Skinner on Thursday as he finished third in his heat race after starting sixth. He then was the runner up in his qualifier. Those points earned him the fifth starting spot in the evening’s A Main.

“We were really good until the feature,” he said. “I messed up and tightened the car too much. I went backwards and finished 12th. But we still ended up seventh in points out of about 70 cars.”

Friday saw Skinner move forward three positions in his heat race to place fourth before dropping three spots in his qualifier to end fifth. He decided it wasn’t worth starting in the fourth row of a B Main after his performance on Thursday, since the event’s format had drivers use their better preliminary points night to determine lineups on Saturday.

“It didn’t make sense to me to use up my equipment running the B Main since there was little chance I could earn more points than I did on Thursday,” he said.

Saturday night began for Skinner with a run from seventh to sixth place in a heat race.

“The track was really wet and it was tough to do much,” he said.

Skinner lined up fourth to start a B Main, which transferred the top three finishers to the main event. He was running third with only a few laps remaining when disaster struck.

“I clipped an infield tire in turn four,” he said. “I didn’t think it knocked the front end out because I was still going forward. But as I started down the straightaway, it started going left while I was turning right. It didn’t turn so I jammed on the brakes and clipped another tire and flipped. I was ok and so was the frame, but about everything else was either bent or broken.”

Health issues put Skinner at a disadvantage for the event prior to the start of racing on Thursday.

“I had an inner ear and sinus infection that I took shots and medicine for before I went to Little Rock,” he said. “It’s really hard to drive a race car when you’re sick.”

Skinner will regroup and rebuild his car to compete this Friday and Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., with the USCS Series.
