Hanks Follows Strong Qualifier Performance with Frustrating Wreck at Short Track Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Nov. 3, 2015) – Disappointing is how Brandon Hanks described the 28th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals.
Rainy weather forced three nights of the four-race Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event to be cancelled with Thursday’s race held on a rough I-30 Speedway.
However, Hanks and the David Smith Racing team started the night on a solid note by finishing where they started – second – in a heat race.
“Cody (Gardner) got a good start and my engine stumbled a little bit,” he said. “I think we may have had a little too much fuel to it. Once he got the lead and we went into turn one he stayed three or four car lengths in front of me the whole race. We were running the same line. The fastest place to run was around the bottom at that point.”
Hanks then put on a show to advance from third to win a qualifier on the tricky track.
“The speed we had was unbelievable,” he said. “I chased down Jason Johnson and passed him. That made us feel real good. That was my highlight of the night and one of the highlights of the year. It was a confidence booster to be that fast.”
That result locked Hanks into the feature, which he started on the outside of the third row.
“We went from being on such a high note and feeling like we had a fast car for the feature to frustration very quickly,” he said. “I just hooked a rut and when I hooked it it was over from there. I went straight in the air and when I came back down someone hit me in the left side.”
Hanks was involved in a crash in turn one on the first lap, which resulted in a last-place finish after his car was run into by another competitor.
He is scheduled to return to action this Friday and Saturday at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., with the USCS Series. Hanks last raced there on March 1, 2014, when he earned a fourth-place result.
