Herrera Claims Emotional Victory during Inaugural Joe Herrera Memorial

Inside Line Promotions – AZTEC, N.M. (Oct. 6, 2015) – Johnny Herrera captured one of the most special victories of his storied career last Saturday at Aztec Speedway.

Herrera recorded his ninth victory of the season during the inaugural Joe Herrera Memorial – an ASCS Southwest Region event that honored his father, who passed away earlier this year.

“It was an emotional night,” he said. “It was a long day. Nothing felt right about the whole day. The good thing was we did what we wanted to do. We won, but I didn’t feel like I was fast.”

Herrera managed to put his emotions to the side when he hopped in his race car for a heat race. A second-place result was good enough to lock Herrera into the feature redraw.

“We went down the frontstretch side by side,” he said after starting on the pole. “The guy on the outside had the better entry into the corner. Pretty much whoever got the lead on the start was going to win the heat race.”

Fate then intervened as Herrera pulled the No. 1 during the random redraw, which put him on the pole for the 25-lap main event.

“We had a couple of initial starts,” he said. “As far as the race goes it was pretty uneventful. We worked our way through lapped cars with no close calls. I kept composed until it was over and then there was some emotion after it. I hadn’t been there in several years. We had a wonderful crowd. I had a lot of my family there. I bet there were probably 60 family members of mine there.”

The win coupled with a lot of support provided good medicine for Herrera.

“I really want to thank Aztec Speedway, the Tenski family, everyone with the ASCS Southwest Region, Bryan Hulbert for calling the race, RacinBoys for allowing it to be broadcast online, CSR Garage and Bruce Griffith Trucking & Equipment for coming on board,” he said. “Everyone’s support means a lot to me and my family.”
