Dramatic Turn of Events sees Wayne Johnson Victorious at Lawton

Bryan Hulbert - Lawton, Oklahoma (August 18, 2012) In a stunning turn of events following Friday’s Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV feature event at Lawton Speedway, Jason Johnson was disqualified after it was revealed that the left side muffler was missing after the night’s 30 lap feature event.

Credited with the win, Wayne Johnson humbly commented on the situation with, “I would hate to have been in Jason’s shoes on that deal. To win the race and get disqualified for a muffler falling off but it is in the rules. It sucks for those guys because he had the best car but you know what the shoe could have very easily been on the other foot. It could have easily been me winning the race and having a muffler fall off.”

Drawing the number eight starting spot, Johnson shot to third in the opening laps as Mike Goodman took the early advantage. Slowing for a caution on lap four, the field re-stacked with Tony Bruce Jr. having to restart at the tail.

With Jason and Wayne Johnson in tow, Goodman protected the inside line as the field got back up to speed. Vacating the inside groove, Wayne Johnson would begin working on Jason Johnson for the runner up spot as Jason began working on Goodman for the lead.

Moving off the bottom of the Lawton Speedway, the Roush/Yates Ford powered No. 41 would bolt into the race lead but would be sent back to second as the red flag waved before the lap could be completed. Snap rolling after hooking the cushion through turn two, Oklahoma City’s Andy Shouse would emerge unscathed. Shouse would be credited with a twenty-first place finish

Rolling to the green Jason Johnson was all over the cushion, shooting into the race lead on the tenth round. Jumping the cushion on the restart, Wayne would fall to fifth as Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Danny Wood capitalized on the situation. Unfortunately mechanical problems would sideline the Statewide Services No. 81 a few laps later.

Racing back into third on lap sixteen, Johnson would take over the runner up spot a lap later. As much as a straight-a-way behind, lapped traffic would do little to help the Missile Motorsports No. 77x as Wayne closed to only a half straight-a-way disadvantage before the checkered flag waved.

Ultimately credited with the win, the corrected finish behind Wayne Johnson saw Sam Hafertepe Jr. second with Mike Goodman rounding out the podium. Making a strong run from seventh, Seth Bergman would cross the strip fourth with Gary Wright rounding out the top five.

Brady Bacon took sixth with Johnny Herrera seventh. Matt Covington would fade from third to finish eighth. Tony Bruce Jr. climbed from sixteenth to ninth with Brad Loyet completing the top ten.

With the win, Wayne Johnson retakes the points lead. This marks the ninth time in 2012 that the Super Shox No. 77x and Stenhouse/JJR No. 41 have swapped the points lead.

The Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series travels next to the Salina Highbanks Speedway in Salina, Oklahoma on Friday August 24th.
