Pelkey Rallies to Canyon victory at Arizona Speedway!

Cody Morris, Apache Junction, Arizona (5-12-2012) - Regional race fans were in for a sensational night of non winged sprint car racing as the ASCS Canyon Region ventured in for the second Canyon stop at Apache Junction’s Arizona Speedway.

Following the most recent stop in Yuma, Arizona, the Canyon competitors arrived at Arizona Speedway prepared for their third contest in as many weeks. Saturday night’s Arizona Speedway event also marked the second of six scheduled visits at Arizona Speedway in the 2012 ASCS Canyon campaign.

A Peoria, Arizona native, former Arizona state Sprint Car titlist, and two-time Canyon winner in 2011; Josh Pelkey stormed forward on the high side from his 16th place starting spot, passing ASCS Southwest king Rick Ziehl late in the 25 lap main event to snare his first Canyon score of the 2012 campaign aboard Robbie Allen’s Advanced Engine powered ABC Body Shop no. 12.

Glendale, Arizona’s Bob Ream Jr. battled up five spots to take runner up honors with Tempe’s Andy Reinbold moving up a couple of spots to accept show position honors.

Polesitter and early race leader Chris Bonneau finished fourth with Ziehl falling one position to complete the top five finishing order of the 25 lap ASCS Canyon Region main event.

Peoria, Arizona’s Dalten Gabbard delivered the backup Hard Charger effort behind Pelkey’s victorious charge from 16th to first. Gabbard climbed nine positions en route to a sixth place finish.

Two-time Canyon champ and three time winner in the young 2012 ASCS Canyon campaign; Buckeye, Arizona’s Chargin Charles Davis Jr. suffered unfortunate luck after a heat race win and front row starting spot was nullified after contact with Ziehl forced Davis to the rear of the field.

A lap 13 incident would provide the finishing touch to the disappointing outing, as Davis found a spot slick enough to spin the Massey Motorsports no. 50, collecting Justin Quinn and Mike Martin in the process.

Davis’ luck was matched by his immediate pursuer in the 2012 ASCS Canyon Region point standings, a pair of early spins forced Phoenix native RJ Johnson to an early exit as well.

The 2012 ASCS Canyon Region campaign will take a week off before blasting back to action with a pair of Memorial Day Weekend events at the Canyon Speedway Park “Salute to Indy” in Peoria, Arizona
