Weiss Holds Off Schatz For Late Model Win

ADA, Minn. (August 3, 2017) – An incredibly stout field of 30 NLRA Late Models stormed into Norman County Raceway Thursday night for their first and only appearance of the 2017 season, presented by Myles Bosch Enterprises and CHS. Four-time WISSOTA Late Model national champion, Ricky Weiss, claimed his third career NCR win when the checkers flew to become the first Late Model driver with three wins to his credit.

For Weiss, it was a hard fought win up until the checkers as he had his hands full with eight-time and defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion, Donny Schatz. Mired in lapped traffic, Weiss was slowed in the final laps, which allowed Schatz to reel him in.

As the white flag flew from the Frandsen Bank & Trust Flagstand, Schatz had a run on Weiss exiting turn two. Schatz peeked underneath Weiss down the backstretch, looking to take the lead in turn three. Weiss took the line away from Schatz exiting turn four, however, and held him off in a drag race to the line.

“Lapped traffic was tough tonight, but I felt like I was getting through it pretty good,” said Weiss in KRJB/KRJM Victory Lane. “Early on I saw (Dustin) Strand pull off and I knew he was going to be a lot of my competition, but then with five to go I saw Schatz up to second so I had to keep digging.”

With the win and Strand’s mechanical issue he suffered on lap 12, Weiss claimed sole possession of the NLRA point lead.

Michael Johnson picked up his second NCR win of the season and third overall in a dominating performance in the Sanders Metal Products IMCA Modifieds. Johnson started third on the grid before taking the lead and leading the final 15 circuits. Tyler Peterson finished second as Alex Engelstad rounded out the podium in only his second race of 2017.

Tyler Peterson rolled out his WISSOTA Midwest Modified for the first time in nearly three years. The Hickson, N.D. driver hasn’t missed a beat since then as he cruised to the feature win; his first Midwest Mod win since August 28th, 2014 and 10th Christian Motors Midwest Mod win overall.

Fargo’s Tim Estenson drove away with another Petermann Seeds INEX Legends feature win. The 15-year-old from Fargo took the lead from Kaitlyn Skalicky at the halfway point before checking out from the field to capture his 16th overall win of the season.

Jesse Skalicky picked up his second win in a row in the Titan Machinery IMCA Sport Mods. Skalicky utilized a lap five restart to get by leader Kelly Jacobson. Once out front, Skalicky drove away from the field as Luke Johnson and Andy Wagner battled for second.

Skalicky took the win by a full straightaway, as Wagner stole second at the checkers from Johnson.

Racing continues next Thursday night at NCR. Green flag drops at 7pm.
