Wells wins final night of Red River Rivalry at Tri-State Speedway

(Kelten Weaver photo) John Rittenoure - POCOLA, Okla. (October 1, 2022) - Cole Wells took advantage of lapped traffic and a slick race track to take the lead and win Saturday’s final night of the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Models vs. Southern Touring Late Models Red River Rivalry at Tri-State Speedway.

Wells, who settled for a second place finish on Friday at Thunderbird Speedway, chased Cody Leonard for 13 laps finally driving inside of Leonard on lap 16 as the leaders approached lap traffic.

Leonard tried to keep pace on the slick high-banked oval but could not stay with Wells and crossed the finish line in second. Kip Hughes raced his way to third on lap 7, Brett Hansen moved a lap 17 move into fourth and Austin Theiss charged his way from 11th to pick up fifth.

Sooner Series points leader Hayden Ross was in good position to follow up his Friday night win with a outside front row starting position in the 25-lapper, but could not keep pace with the leaders and fell back to a sixth place finish.

With only two races left on the 2022 schedule Ross has officially locked up his first CWT Sooner Series season championship. Ross also leads the Southern Touring points race and is very close to becoming a two-series champion.

The Sooner late models return to action next Saturday, Oct. 8, at Enid Speedway.

About Sooner Late Model Series
The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas as well.
