Iron-Man Late Model Series

Cory Hedgecock and Chris Wilson Capture Iron-Man Racing Series Scorcher Victories at Volunteer Speedway

BULLS GAP, TENNESSEE (September 14, 2022)– The Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series and the Brucebilt Performance Parts Iron-Man Open Wheel Modified Southern Series would visit Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN for the track’s 15th Annual Scorcher on Wednesday evening. In Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series action, Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, TN would lead the final five laps to score the $12,000 victory, while Chris Wilson of Crossville, TN would see the checkered flag first in the Brucebilt Performance Parts Iron-Man Open Wheel Modified Southern Series main event.

The victory by the 30-year-old Hedgecock would be his second series win of the season and eighth career Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series victory and would come behind the wheel of a Black Diamond Race Car powered by an Eagle Race Engine with sponsorship from E-Z-GO, Eagle Race Engines, Voo Doo Technology, Pace Performance, K and P Used Cars, Budget Transmissions, I-75 Raceway, Green’s Recycling, W.E. Hardscape and Masonry, Circle H Service, Noble Knights Construction Service, Hickory Hardscapes, and Cobb’s Auto Parts.

For the 33-year-old Wilson, his victory would be his second career Brucebilt Performance Parts Iron-Man Open Wheel Modified Series victory and would come aboard a Pierce Platinum Race Car powered by a Mullins Race Engine and carries sponsorship from Halo Motorsports, CrossFit Mayhem, Rowland Advertising, and Gulla Automotive.

Cory Hedgecock would take the lead at the start of the Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Southern Series 15th Annual Scorcher main event, with Dale McDowell, Scott Bloomquist, Jensen Ford, and Camaron giving chase. A spin by Chase King on lap two exiting turn two would draw the first yellow flag of the event, with several other cars collected in the incident. The restart would see the front five remain the same, but the yellow flag would quickly wave again on lap three for a spin in turn two by Dakotah Knuckles. The restart would see Marlar take fourth from Ford, with Ford getting pressure for fifth from Ross Bailes, with Bailes taking the position on lap five. Jason Welshan would slow in turn two to draw the next caution flag, with the front three remaining the same on the restart, while Bailes would claim fourth from Marlar on lap ten. The caution would appear again on lap eleven for a slowed Sam Seawright in turn two. Hedgecock would again maintain the lead on the restart, with Bloomquist taking second from McDowell, while Marlar would reclaim fourth from Bailes. The front five would remain the same at this point until Knuckles would again slow on the track to bring out another caution on lap nineteen. This restart would see Hedgecock slip up the track a bit in turn two and McDowell would take second from Bloomquist and McDowell would complete the third to first move by claiming the lead from Hedgecock in turn three. Marlar would grab third from Bloomquist on lap twenty-one, while Bailes would snag fourth from Bloomquist one circuit later. Michael Chilton, who started 12th, would make his way into the top five past Bloomquist on lap twenty-three. McDowell would begin to really stretch his lead out over the field and would begin lapping slower traffic on lap thirty. McDowell would have better than a straightaway advantage over Hedgecock when the caution appeared on lap forty-three when Bailes spun in turn four, running fourth place at the time. Also during this caution period, third-place Marlar would pull his machine to the infield with overheating issues. This restart would would see McDowell maintain the lead, with Hedgecock second, Chilton would now be third, followed by Ford and Bloomquist. Hedgecock would stay with McDowell on the restart, however, heartbreak would occur for the race leader when he experienced a flat left-rear tire entering turn three on lap forty-six. McDowell would change the flat tire and return, but the restart would come back when Ford lost a driveshaft in turn four as the field came back to the green flag. Hedgecock would maintain control of the event over the waning few laps and score the victory, with Chilton and Bloomquist finishing second and third. Cla Knight would bring his machine home in fourth, while McDowell would recover to finish fifth. The remainder of the top ten finishers would be Bailes, 18th place starting Vic Hill, Heath Hindman, Chase King, and Dillon Tidmore.

Chris Wilson would take the lead at the drop of the green flag on the Brucebilt Performance Parts Iron-Man Open Wheel Modified Southern Series feature contest, with Brandon Kinzer, Jacob Hall, Ben Harmon, and Adam Ogle giving chase. The front five would remain in this order as the first caution appeared on lap six for a slowed Richie Overholser in turn two. The restart would see the top five stay in the same order, with Wilson flexing his muscles and pulling away from runner-up Kinzer at this point in the race until the final caution of the contest waved on lap thirteen for debris on the track. The restart would see the front quartet of cars remain the same, while Chad Ogle would pressure Adam Ogle for fifth and take the spot on lap fourteen. Wilson would again quickly pull away from Kinzer, while Chad Ogle continued his march forward with a high-side driving display that would eventually see him take third Hall with just two laps remaining. Wilson would cruise to the victory over Kinzer, with Chad Ogle finishing third. Hall and Harmon would round out the top five. The remainder of the top finishers would be Peyton Harlow, Adam Ogle, 16th place starting Wayne James, Michael Asberry, and Kaleb Trent.
