Freeman Encouraged by Tulsa Shootout Performance While Shaking Off Rust

Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 3, 2018) – Cody Freeman is optimistic following his return to racing last week during the 33rd annual Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout.

The micro sprint event, which ran from Thursday through Sunday inside the River Spirit Expo Center, drew more than 1,000 entries. Freeman competed in a field of more than 250 drivers in both the stock non-wing and outlaw non-wing divisions.

“It was a long week and while we didn’t make the Sunday shows we ended on a positive note and passed a lot of cars,” he said. “At least we knew we were fast. It wasn’t bad considering I haven’t raced in a couple of months.”

Freeman opened the action Thursday in his outlaw non-wing heat race. After starting on the pole, he dropped to sixth before finishing fifth.

“They watered the track right before we went out,” he said. “They gave us a few hot laps and then lined us up to race. The bottom didn’t get run in very well and at the start the outside line took off. I jumped the berm in turns one and two and a couple more cars got by. I got back going and passed a car to finish fifth.”

That relegated him to a C Main on Friday, when he finished 11th after some bad luck.

“The same thing happened,” he said. “They watered the track right before we went out. As we were running the track in a part fell off the chain tensioner and the car was making funny noises. Then during the race a bolt came out in the front axle assembly so I just pulled in.”

Freeman produced better results in the stock non-wing division as he advanced from fourth to third place in his heat race on Friday. He then won a C Main the following day to transfer into the rear of a B Main on Sunday.

“We won the C Main, which put us starting 13th in a B Main on Sunday,” he said. “We got to sixth and missed the transfer by four cars. I just needed to start up front a little higher and I think we could have made the show.”

The strong finish to the weekend gives him momentum as he is slated to return to action Feb. 16-17 at Superbowl Speedway in Greenville, Texas, where he will compete with the NOW600 Series.
