Inside Line Promotions – CALISTOGA, Calif. (June 28, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi earned a pair of top-six finishes last weekend to extend his lead in the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series championship standings to 19 points.

“The biggest thing is to continue knocking off top fives,” he said. “We were strong both nights and hopefully we will continue to run up front.”

Scelzi kicked off last weekend in his Roth Motorsports backed entry on Friday during the Pombo/Sargent Classic at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., where he continued his streak of top-10 finishes at the bullring to 17 straight races.

“In Watsonville we really struggled early,” he said. “We couldn’t get a good grip on the car for qualifying or the heat race. We made some wholesale changes for the feature and we were able to get a sixth-place finish. I felt really good around the bottom of turns one and two and there weren’t many guys down there. It was a very slow line and you had to be particular to run it.”

Scelzi, who qualified 16th quickest and finished sixth in a heat race, rallied from 16th to post a sixth-place result during the main event.

The King of the West doubleheader concluded on Saturday at Calistoga Speedway for the Wine Country Classic, which began with Scelzi qualifying seventh quickest. He then won a heat race to lock himself into the dash, where he maneuvered from seventh to third place.

“We were really strong all night,” he said. “I was working the bottom in the main event and was side by side with Kyle Hirst for second. About halfway through I lost power steering and was really fighting it. Then in the last few laps I had a left rear tire going down on me. We were lucky to finish.”

Scelzi held on for a fourth-place result, which marked his 10th top five of the season.

Following the solid drive around the scenic half-mile oval Scelzi and his family ventured approximately three hours through the winding mountain roads to make their way north to embark upon the Western Sprint Tour Speedweek, which features six races at five tracks in Northern California and Oregon beginning Sunday at Siskiyou Motor Speedway in Yreka, Calif.

“When we left Calistoga with my brother, Giovanni, and Brent Ventura from Roth Motorsports we were on a very curvy road for quite a while,” he said. “I can’t wait to get back on race tracks where it’s usually smoother and I only have to turn left.”

The remainder of the Speedweek includes Monday at Southern Oregon Speedway in White City, Ore., Tuesday at Coos Bay Speedway in Coos Bay, Ore., Thursday at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore., and Friday and Saturday at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore.

“I’m really excited to race at some new race tracks,” he said. “I’m hoping we can come away with top 10s at every race and maybe a win or two. The program with Dan is really strong. If we can go in and have speed and be fast it will be a big confidence booster.”
