For folks that don't know one of the Cottage Grove Speedway's brightest stars is suffering some health issues. Colin Baker, of Cottage Grove, is currently in the intensive care unit at River Bend Hospital in Springfield. He is suffering from a rare and life threatening genetic disorder called Wilson's disease.
With Wilson's disease, the body is unable to get rid of copper which builds up and damages vital organs. The majority of cases result in liver failure. However, Colin's condition has also affected his brain causing severe neurological side effects. Medication to reverse the copper build up is the only treatment option at this point.
He is doing much better and getting back to his normal self. He is able to eat regularly and is getting stronger and stronger each day. Colin and is entire family are so grateful from fans, drivers, crew member, etc. from all over the country.
“We appreciate everyone's support of Colin,” said Ted Baker, and Colin's father, “it's hard to put into words all the love and generosity that all these people have shown.”
The family would like to let everyone know that there is a GoFundMe page that folks can visit if they would like to help them with the cost of the medical bills. The GoFundMe page can be found at http://www.gofundme.com/colinbaker . If you would like to send Colin a get well message you are more than welcome to post on Ted Baker's personal Facebook page or private message Ted.
Colin Baker was the 2014 Cottage Grove Speedway track champion and the winner of the American Sprint Car Series-Northwest Region last year too. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Colin and his family and we wish him a speedy recovery.
