Wissota Late Model Challenge Series
Sabraski Steals Granite City Challenge Series Victory at GCMP
For Immediate Release – July 21st, 2024
The third event of the July swing for the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series powered by Momentum Truck Group, Freightliner, Western Star was held at the Granite City Motor Park in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota for the third night of the weekend and saw Shane Sabraski set a new track record with a lap of 13.553 seconds around the oval.
Kevin Burdick and Jesse Glenz topped the two qualifying heat races early in the night’s program to set the feature starting lineup.
Burdick and Glenz earned the front row for the night’s $3,000 to win, 40-lap feature event with Burdick getting the upper hand on the initial start and leading the field into turn number one and lead the opening lap.
Burdick ran alone out front as Glenz, Shane Sabraski and Tyler Peterson ran in close quarters for second. Glenz was able to roll up and wrestle the lead away from Burdick on lap 8 and drove off to a sizeable lead, while Burdick, Peterson and Sabraski began to battle for second from laps 11 through 17, running two and three wide for position until the first caution of the race flew for a Rick Niemi spin in turn two.
On the restart, the lead trio ran three wide into the first corner and Sabraski came out with the position and tried to chase down Glenz, who was trying to slip off into the night.
Glenz led Sabraski, Peterson, Burdick and Cole Searing, who was piloting a Steve Hucovski-owned #88 car for the night in the top five.
Just past half way, the second, and final caution of the event flew for debris, bunching up the field one more time.
On the restart, Sabraski dove into the bottom and was able to slide by Glenz into the lead and once he did, he was able to distance himself pretty quickly from the field out front. The final 15 laps ran non-stop with Peterson, Glenz and Burdick in tight formation for second through fifth.
Sabraski was able to race to his second series win of the weekend in front of his hometown crowd. Peterson ran second with Burdick third at the line. Glenz and Searing rounded out the top five.
Following the top five were Jeff Provinzino, Ryan Mikkelson, Josh Zimpel, Jeff Massingill and Adam Ayotte in tenth.
