Berck soars at Adams County Speedway
By MBSLS PR (Corning, IA) -- Saturday night saw the Malvern Bank Super Late Model series head back to Iowa one last time in 2017, and the defending series champion won a true race of attrition.

The series made its second of two appearances to the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa on Saturday. It was also the fourth and final appearance for the series in the state of Iowa for the 2017 season. A field of 28 late models from both Nebraska and Iowa made the trip out the longest racetrack on the Malvern Bank Series schedule for a chance at a $2,000 payday.
Twenty-four cars made up the field for the 25-lap main event, and it was Brian and Andrew Kosiski sharing the front row. Andrew Kosiski started off taking the lead while Kyle Berck and Brian Kosiski battle for second. Andrew started clicking off the laps in the early going. Andrew, who won at Adams County in a weekly late model show the week before, was going for his first Malvern Bank Series win of the season.
However, it was not meant to be for the Omaha native as Kosiski jumped the cushion and went over the edge of the track in turn one while leading with 16 laps to go. This spin brought out the first caution of the race.
Kosiski would have to start in the back of the pack giving the lead over to Kyle Berck. Berck led until the next caution came out with 11 laps to go for another spin in turn one, this one involving Matt Buller. That spin was followed up by a couple of more cautions on the restarts. The first was for Ben Shaller going over the edge in turn one and the next one for Josh Most and Amanda O’Neal spinning out in turn two.
Then, the big one happened. On the restart following Most and O’Neal’s spin, J.C. Wyman got spun in front of the field as the field came down to the green flag. This sent the field running for cover as most of the cars smashed into each other down the front stretch. The biggest part of the wreck was when Vic Lovejoy flipped up and over Derrel DeFrance’s car. The massive pileup involved 16 cars in all and resulted in a 53 minute long red flag.
Of the 16 cars involved, Brian Kosiski, Paul Glendenning, Sterling Perkins, Brad Perdue, Curt Drake, John Anderson, and Jason O’Brien continued on. Meanwhile, Derrel DeFrance, Vic Lovejoy, Amanda O’Neal, Ben Schaller, Al Zeitner, Josh Most, J.C. Wyman, and Josh Krug were all knocked out of the race.
When racing resumed, Berck continued to lead the way with Bill Leighton Jr. trying to chase him down. Andrew Kosiski and point leader Tad Pospisil were both able to escape from the big wreck without damage, and they both found themselves battling in and just outside the top five.
The final caution of the race came out after Sterling Perkins spun out on the front stretch with only six laps remaining. Perkins was able to come back following the big wreck, and the Lamoni, Iowa driver did his best to finish the race out.
When the dust settled, it was Marquette, Nebraska’s Kyle Berck picking up the big check. It marked his fourth win of the 2017 season and his 72nd career Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series win. Bill Leighton Jr. finished in second while Tad Pospisil came in third. Jesse Sobbing finished in fourth, and Nate Beyenhof rounded out the top five.
Only four more races remain on the schedule for the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series. The tour’s next stop is the third and final appearance at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska to finish out a busy month of August.
Next, the tour has a two-day weekend on September 8 and 9. On the 8th, the series heads to the high banks of Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Nebraska to take part in the 2017 Nebraska Cup. Then on the 9th, the series heads back up north for the second show at the Off-Road Speedway in Norfolk, Nebraska as the series participates in the Bob Haase Memorial. And to close out the tour, the series heads back to I-80 Speedway on September 30 for the season finale at the Midwest Fall Brawl.
