Brian Brown - NSL Season Closes at I-80!

(Bill W) October 6, 2015 – Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team put the FVP National Sprint League behind them in the series’ finale at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska last weekend. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver posted a fourth place finish in the prelim before finishing eighth in the finale. The team will regroup and prepare for the World Finals in Charlotte, North Carolina, November 5-7.

You started the weekend well. Friday, you came out 28th, but still laid down quick time.

Obviously, it’s very important to qualify well. Lately, I’ve been messing up one corner or the other, so to get quick time was good for the team. Our Charlie Garrett motors and Maxim Chassis are always good.

You backed that up, going from sixth to win your heat.

Our car was phenomenal again. We made the right adjustments from qualifying to the heat. Anytime you can go from sixth to win a heat with that caliber of drivers, it’s great. Before we went out, I was just worried about getting a top five. We made a couple good corners and got in position, and we were able to win. That’s always a good sign going into the feature.

You drew a starting spot inside row three for the feature. What changes, if any, did you make?

We may have over-engineered a little from the heat to the feature. From where we were starting, maybe we should have left it alone. We got the car too tight for the first three-quarters of the race. We were in trouble there, but the last four or five laps, I feel we were as good as anybody. We were able to go from seventh to fourth the last couple laps. It’s good when you feel like you’re mediocre and you’re able to pull off a top five finish. That’s always a good sign.

The track was slicker on Saturday, and you timed in fourth quick.

The track was a little bit different. That’s one thing about I-80 Speedway. The Kosiski’s do a good job. Eighty to ninety percent of the time it gets wide, and you’re able to race on it. It’s one of my top two or three favorite places to race. We were able to move around the track a little. I made one good corner on one end, and one good corner on the other, I just wasn’t able to put a whole lap together. You do that with these guys, and you’re fourth quick.

It looked like you got bottled up in your heat.

We got going pretty well on the initial start and it got called back. The second one, we got going pretty well and got to racing with Danny (Lasoski). We ended up losing a spot to Tasker (Phillips), and ended up fifth. We may have been racing a little hard for that spot, but you want to do as well as you can whenever you’re on the track. Luckily, we stayed in the redraw.

You drew the fourth row for the feature.

We did a 180 with the car from where we were in the heat race. We felt we had it where we needed to be. The tires react so different in clean air than they do in dirty air. It makes the crew chief and driver pull their hair out. It’s tough. Saturday in the feature was no different. We kept the car a little freer, but we just couldn’t hold onto anything out there. Usually, the slicker the better for us, but we ended up eighth.

It looks like the team will be regrouping.

We’re looking at Charlotte at this point. It’s been a long 2015, and we’re trying to regroup and have a good finish there. At this point, I don’t see us doing anything else, but that could change.
