Inside Line Promotions – YAKIMA, Wash. (Sept. 26, 2017) – Henry Van Dam raced with a heavy heart last weekend following the sudden passing of a beloved uncle.

“My Uncle Rich, who is my dad’s brother, passed away,” he said. “I grew up with him as a second dad to me. He was a great man and I have a lot of great memories with him. I know his beliefs so I know where he went, which gives us a certain sense of peace.”

The memorial service was last Friday and Van Dam headed east to compete on Saturday with the Summer Thunder Sprint Series at Central Washington State Fair Speedway.

“It was a night you had to put yourself in a good position,” he said. “We did that by qualifying in the top eight. Then moving forward in the heat race puts you in a good spot.”

Van Dam qualified seventh quickest and he advanced from third to second place in a heat race. That locked him into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 3 to start the main event on the inside of the second row.

“I was a little hesitant on which way we wanted to go with the setup,” he said. “We had a really good car in the heat race, but we weren’t super agile to be able to pass. We made a couple of adjustments and that helped for the A Main.

“It took us about 10 laps to get to second place. In that amount of time the leader had about half a track ahead of us. The race stayed green until Lap 27. We were able to close to eight or 10 car lengths before the caution. I thought we might have had something in traffic. Once the caution came out that gave the leader clean air and made it tough to do anything.”

Van Dam scored a runner-up result, which was his seventh top five of the season.

He is slated to compete this Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.
