Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (Aug. 6, 2019) – An evening that began with promise ended in disappointment for Cody Masse last Saturday at Big Sky Speedway.

After Friday night’s scheduled race with the ASCS Frontier Region at Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Mont., fell to rain, Masse began Saturday evening’s competition at Big Sky Speedway by starting on the outside of the front row in his heat race.

“We had a lot of speed in our heat race,” he said. “We ran second for a little bit before taking the lead and winning the race.”

Unfortunately, Masse had little time to celebrate the victory as his evening took a sudden turn for the worse shortly after the win.

“They measured our nose wing and it was a quarter inch too far forward so we were disqualified,” he said. “We had measured it at the shop during the week because we just got new nose wing struts. Out measurement said we were a quarter inch to the good, but we didn’t measure it the same way they did.

“It was very frustrating. We would have been in the draw for one of the top four starting spots in the feature. Instead, we had to start last. But a rule is a rule.”

Masse’s evening didn’t improve once the feature began. He tagged the 18-car field.

“I tried the top of the track at first, hoping to get the car wound up to maintain my speed and get around the cars on the bottom,” he said. “But the track was super slick from the bottom to the very top. So I moved to the bottom where it was pretty much follow the leader.

“I tried to get inside a guy exiting turn four on the second lap when I tagged the infield tire, taking the front end out of our car. It was definitely a mistake on my part, especially that early in the race. I’m usually pretty good about getting as close as possible to the tires without hitting them, but this time I was really pressing the issue after starting in the back.

“I felt particularly bad for my crew. I really appreciate all of the work they do, especially in the last month after putting the car back together a couple of times after it got torn up.”

While the night didn’t end well, the car’s speed gave Masse confidence going into this weekend’s NSA Series doubleheader at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont.

“Last year we didn’t have a whole lot of speed, but we did a good job of executing and getting the best finish possible most of the time,” he said. “This year we have better speed, but just can’t get many good finishes. We just need to put together a complete night with me doing my job for 25 laps and we should get a top five.”
