Inside Line Promotions – BILLINGS, Mont. (July 17, 2018) – A solid doubleheader advanced Cody Masse to third in the ASCS Frontier Region championship standings.

“It was a nice, solid weekend,” he said. “No issues and we kept the car in one piece, which has been a big focus for us this year. That’s allowing us to get faster by letting us work on the race car setups and thinking about going fast rather than thinking about fixing the car.”

Masse’s racing weekend began on Friday at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont., where he got off to a tough start by finishing sixth in his heat race.

“The track had gone away more than I thought it had,” he said. “I lost a couple of spots after starting fourth.”

Masse was able to transfer from the B Main after starting sixth.

“We were able to move up to finish third in the B Main, which had us starting in the last row in the 20-car A Main,” he said. “We’ve struggled with dry slick tracks – especially in Great Falls – but we had a really good race car this time. I passed four or five cars in the feature even though it was pretty much single file around the bottom and I managed to move up to 12th at the checkered. I’d like to be top 10, but it was a good recovery from the weak start to the night. Those are the kind of nights you need when you’re running for points.”

Masse started ninth in his heat race the following night at Big Sky Speedway, a track where he’s struggled in the past.

“I was able to pass a few cars and get up to sixth before I made a mistake and let one of them back by me,” he said. “But it was nice to be passing some cars in the heat race rather than being passed, which is the way it’s been lately.

“We started 12th in the feature and the track took rubber around the middle of the race so it was mostly single file the rest of the race. We had a good car again, but just weren’t able to go anywhere and ended up 13th.

“It was a little disappointing not to run top 10, but Billings has been by far our worst track over the last few years. We seem to be finally gaining on it and it felt good to improve over our race in June there when we finished 18th.”

Masse was also appreciative of receiving advice from a long-time racer.

“Tim Gee was a huge help this weekend,” he said. “He pointed out some things and gave us some suggestions to get us going in the right direction. We really appreciated that.”

Masse will take this weekend off as the ASCS Frontier Region is idle before making the long haul to Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., on July 27 and Gillette Thunder Speedway in Gillette, Wyo., on July 28.
