Rules Update: Wheel Cover Rule Updated For 2017 Season

TULSA, Okla. (January 30, 2017) The offices of the American Sprint Car Series have updated the rule regarding Wheel Covers for the 2017 season. After conversation with several teams, tracks, and sanctioning bodies, the ruling will be on board with the World of Outlaws and Knoxville Raceway.

Under Section 9, part 3 of the ASCS Rule Book, the rule regarding Wheel Covers reads as such:

It is highly recommended that wheel covers have a minimum of 5 mounting points. However, 5 and 3 mounting point wheel covers will be allowed for competition under the following conditions: Starting with the 2017 racing season, wheel covers having a minimum of 5 attachment points may continue to use dzus fasteners. Said dzus fasteners must be made of steel only. Wheel Covers having only 3 attachment points must be bolted-on all three points utilizing a minimum 5/16”, flanged steel bolt and an approved fastening (nut assembly) system.

Approved fastening (nut assembly) systems:

Keyser Manufacturing, Part #100 7-101.

Triple X Race, Co.: Steel: SC-WH-7810 (1"); SC-WH-7820 (1 3/8") / Titanium: SC-WH-7830 (1”); SC-WH-7840 (1 3/8”)

Optional fastening systems that are equal of superior to the above approved system will be readily approved at the sole discretion of ASCS Technical Officials.

“We had several teams contact us and voice their concerns over the wording we had in place, and after looking at the options and the cost, we wanted to make sure that we allowed our teams the ability to run anywhere without having to make massive changes,” said ASCS National Director, Matt Ward.

“Social Media has its way of presenting false arguments and accusations, but this move has everything to do with the safety of those in attendance. Even at the Chili Bowl, we had several wheel covers come off. One that really stands out shot up the ramp towards the pits. They were all metal covers, so the argument of the material and blaming non-metal covers has no base.”

The June 1, 2017 grace period for teams to comply with the updated rules is still in place as teams across the world of Sprint Car Racing work on getting parts ordered and installed. The lineup of races for the whole of the American Sprint Car Series now exceeds 150 events across 23 states.
