Badger Midgets Open 88th Season Friday at Kankakee; First Time At Facility in 33 Years
Sun Prairie, WI (May 4, 2023) - The Advanced Fastening Supply Badger Midget Auto Racing Association will race at Kankakee County Speedway in Kankakee, IL, Friday, May 5, for the first time in exactly 33 years. The race will open the 88th season of midget racing for the Badger Midget Series with a stout field of cars expected to compete.
Friday’s event will feature both the Badger Midgets and the relaunched MARA midget series which is also sanctioned by the BMARA. This will mark the third race of the 2023 MARA season and the first with the two series competing together on the same night.
On the Badger Midget series’ last visit to the Kankakee County Speedway in 1990, Wisconsin’s own Dean Erfurth came out the victor followed by Dean Billings, and Kevin Koch. Billings set fast time that evening with a lap of 15.124 seconds setting a track record which could be in jeopardy on Friday.
The 2022 champion Zach Boden is limiting himself to a part time schedule in 2023 opening things up for new names and faces to make their mark in the history books. Several drivers including Kyle Stark, Adam Taylor, Todd Kluever, Daltyn England, RJ Corson and a whole cast of others are expected to fight it out all season long for the coveted Badger championship.
Friday’s field is expected to include top drivers from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa all competing for the top spot. Several rookie drivers are also set to compete this season creating what is likely to be a season-long battle for the coveted Rookie of the Year title. Drivers such as Eric Blumer, Robby Wirth, Miles Doherty, Parker Jones, Nick Killian, and Michael Hermacinski will all see their first laps in a midget this season.
Pit gates are set to open at 4:00 pm with Hot Laps beginning at approximately 6:10 pm. Races will follow hot laps. Also on the card will be several stock car divisions and the Midwest Throwback vintage sprint cars. More information is available on bmara.com and the BMARA Racing Facebook page.
