Hatton prevails at Angell Park Speedway
By Bryan Gapinski (Sun Prairie, WI) -- Four-time series champion Scott Hatton scored a popular victory, winning the 20-lap Mid-State Equipment/Zimbrick Chevrolet of Sun Prairie Badger Midget Racing Series feature, Sunday Night at Angell Park Speedway. The feature victory was Hatton's 35th career at the track, fifth place on the all-time track's feature win list.
Polesitter Kyle Koch paced the initial feature lap, before the red flag appeared when Denny Smith hit the frontstretch wall, and flipped. Smith was uninjured. On the restart Koch continued to lead but received constant pressure from Kevin Olson. Olson, and Robbie Ray tangled battling for second place on the seventh lap, with Olson coming to spinning to a stop.
Hatton lined up fourth on the restart. With a narrow fast groove on the bottom of the track, Hatton used the topside to gain positions on the restart. Within two laps of the restart Hatton was positioned in second place behind Koch.
Hatton passed Koch for the lead on Lap 11. One lap later Ray moved into the runner-up position. Hatton held a four-car length lead over Ray, with five laps remaining.
Hatton finished 2.56 seconds ahead of Ray driving his Stealth/Honda No.1. Koch scored a career series best feature finish with third place, followed by Kurt Mayhew, and Brad Greenup. Sixth place finishing Zach Boden won the Howard Law Cash Draw, a $200 bonus for a randomly selected feature finishing position.
"We had to run where nobody else was running to get the passes done for positions, it was a tricky track but winning here is always special" commented Hatton.
Badger will run the first of three events at Sycamore (Ill.) Speedway on Saturday Night June17 before returning to Angell Park Speedway the following evening June 18 as part of a three division show which features the IRA Bumper to Bumper Outlaw Sprint Car Series, and Wisconsin Dirt Racing Legends Series.
