Scelzi Captures Top Five at Thunderbowl in Preparation for Trophy Cup

Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 12, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi garnered his best finish of the season at Thunderbowl Raceway at the right time.
Scelzi scored a fifth-place result at the unique track last Saturday during a King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event, which gives him eight top-10 finishes in his 10 races since returning from a back injury.
“I feel like I’m having a lot more fun now and enjoying what I’m doing,” he said. “I’m very excited about Trophy Cup and maybe this year I can finally get the finish we’ve been close to earning.”
Scelzi will return to Thunderbowl Raceway this Thursday through Saturday for the 22nd annual Trophy Cup, which is one of the premier California sprint car events that Scelzi has led during two of the last three years.
“It’s great that we’ve been able to run so strong lately,” he said. “I can’t wait to take that momentum into this weekend. Hopefully we’ll keep it rolling and put ourselves in contention once again.”
Last Saturday’s King of the West event continued Scelzi’s hot streak.
“We went out early for qualifying,” he said. “When I went out I was second quick for a long time. The track ended up getting faster and faster. Unfortunately that made us 10th quick, but that also put us on the front row of a heat race. We won our heat race like we had to do.”
Scelzi, who qualified 10th quickest to start a heat race on the outside of the front row, led the distance of the heat to lock himself into the dash. Unfortunately, he was nearly caught up in an opening-lap crash and that cost him several positions.
“I was passing for second and the guy lost it coming out of turn two,” he said. “He came down and it bottled both of us up. We lost a couple of positions and that’s where we finished.”
That lined Scelzi up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
“The race track was very unforgiving,” he said. “It was extremely rough and there wasn’t much passing going on. It was one of those nights where you just needed to survive. I got up to fourth and on the final restart I hit a hole in turns one and two and got passed to finish fifth. We put together a complete night from start to finish and that’s something we’ve been accomplishing more recently.”
Scelzi’s fifth-place finish was his 17th top five of the season.
