Hendricks Overcomes Obstacles for 12th-Place POWRi National Series Finish

Inside Line Promotions – MACON, Ill. (Aug. 22, 2017) – Saturday evening was a night of overcoming obstacles for Zane Hendricks as he fought to a 12th-place finish during a POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series event at Macon Speedway.
Hendricks’ night began with a seventh-place starting position in a nine-car heat race.
“A car flipped and landed right in front of me,” he said. “It bent my front shock. I had to go to the back and was able to come back and finish fifth.”
His result in the heat race locked Hendricks into the final lock-in position for the night’s A Main, in which he was scheduled to start 14th. Unfortunately, a mechanical issue was discovered as he attempted to push off for the main event.
“Evidently, the battery came unplugged after I was involved in the wreck in the heat race,” he said. “We were able to get it fixed in time to race, but since we had to work on the car they made me start in the back (22nd).”
Like many of the tracks on the midget rookie’s schedule this season, Macon was a new oval for Hendricks and offered another valuable learning experience.
“The track slicked off a lot more than we expected it to,” he said. “It was kind of a different track. The bottom is really flat and then there’s some banking about halfway up. I also lost my brakes after a few laps. I’d be able to pump them up during a caution, but they’d only last for about a couple of laps. I tried running the bottom, but I couldn’t do it without brakes.
“The last eight to 10 laps or so I got up on top and got into a rhythm. That was when I really started passing cars. I wish I would’ve gone up there sooner. But it still wasn’t a bad night considering everything.”
Hendricks will take the momentum from charging to a 12th-place finish into this weekend when he will compete on Friday at Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan., and Saturday at Springfield Raceway in Springfield, Mo., with the POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget Series. He enters the weekend ranked fifth in the championship standings.
