Hagar Showing Improvement in Midget Program During Rare Race

Inside Line Promotions – PEVELY, Mo. (Aug. 8, 2017) – Derek Hagar is pleased with the growth his midget program has generated in the short time since it was created.
Hagar competed in the midget last Friday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series, marking only his second start of the season in the race car and first since March.
He kicked off the action by finishing third in a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row.
“We stumbled on the start and I backed up to fourth, but I got back to third before the race ended,” he said. “That put me 16th in points to start the A Main 16th.”
Hagar gained a handful of positions before a flat right rear tire just after the midpoint of the race ended his night early with a 21st-place result.
“We worked our way up and we passed some good cars,” he said. “I was pretty impressed with our performance in only our second night out and the first night on a big track. The car was starting to come in good. We had a caution and I had figured out what I needed to do to make some momentum and pass some cars.
“The axle nut came loose on the right rear and hit the bleeder, which made the tire go flat. It was a blessing in disguise because I would have kept running it and the axle nut would have come off. I don’t know what would have caused that deal to come loose other than a vibration. We have to go to the drawing board to figure it out.”
Hagar is slated to return to sprint car competition this Friday and Saturday at Jackson Motor Speedway in Byram, Miss., with the USCS Series and ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints.
Hagar has won at the track each of the last three seasons and he has a podium there during five straight years. He has posted results of second, fourth and fourth, respectively, during three starts this season.
