Inside Line Promotions – GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (July 18, 2017) – Zane Hendricks had a rocket of a race car throughout the first half of the main event during both nights of last weekend’s POWRi Lucas Oil National Midgets Series doubleheader at Valley Speedway.
“We had a lot of speed, but we didn’t get the end results that we wanted,” he said.
The two-day show, which was co-sanctioned with the POWRi Lucas Oil West Midgets Series, started on Friday when Hendricks advanced from seventh to fourth place in a heat race.
“I had a good heat race that locked me into the feature,” he said. “I started 14th and I got up to fifth or sixth and then I started fading back. I was disappointed in that. The track started getting slicker and there were a couple of holes that I hit that would upset the car. I’d almost have to come to a complete stop to get it back together. It was a learning experience.”
Hendricks hung on for a 15th-place finish.
He returned to the bullring on Saturday for the event finale, which began with a sixth-place heat race result.
“I got pushed into the infield and went all the way to the back,” he said. “Then I got knocked over the cushion and ended up toward the back. The night turned around after a rough start though. Honestly, I was kind of mad after the heat.”
Hendricks used that emotion to rally from 12th to a runner-up result in the B Main to earn a transfer into the main event.
“I got a really good start and then I found a good line there about a third of the way through,” he said. “We had a really good car and the track was a lot smoother than the night before. It worked out good.”
Hendricks continued to march forward from his 18th starting position in the A Main.
“I was up to eighth about halfway through the race, but the car started smoking so I pulled off because we don’t have a backup engine,” he said. “Luckily, a fitting broke and was spraying some oil on the headers to create the smoke.”
Hendricks was credited with a 22nd-place finish.
“We started out good in the main event all weekend,” he said. “We were really fast and we have some good momentum going into our next race.”
Hendricks will take this weekend off before resuming competition on July 28 at Flint Creek Speedway in West Siloam Springs, Okla., with the POWRi Lucas Oil West Midgets Series.
