Brad Peterson Dominates at CLS in Traditional Sprints
A very cold, windy night more like late winter than spring was in store for racers and fans at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday evening May 19. The POWRi UMSS Lucas Oil Traditional Sprint Car Series was partnered up with the wing division, and the TSCS sprints once again put on a show for the fans. At the end of their 25 lap caution-free feature, 2017 TSCS Rookie of the Year Brad Peterson earned his second career win and second at Cedar Lake. Peterson led the final nineteen laps for a dominating win on his way to parking in Rock Auto Victory Lane.
Another strong field of 21 POWRi Lucas Oil Traditional sprints signed into the pits. Winners of the three heat races included 2017 TSCS Champion Mike Mueller, Peterson, and Johnny Parsons III. With the top six drivers in passing points redrawing after the heats, it would be Parsons and Mueller going from the front row followed by Peterson, 2011 TSCS Champion Kevin Bradwell, Scott Brandt and Jon Lewerer.
Parsons, running his patented low groove, immediately grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag for their 25 lap feature. An exciting third to first move took place by Peterson on lap 7, as he was running up top on the cushion. Peterson proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field. On the move forward from his 7th starting position, 2014 TSCS Champion Cam Schafer moved by Parson into second on lap 17 and slowly began closing the distance on Peterson. Although Schafer did close in somewhat, he never drew close enough to challenge Peterson over the course of the final eight laps, and with no caution to close up the field, Schafer had to settle for second. Mike Mueller, Parsons and Friday night Princeton winner Jake Kouba rounded out the top five finishers. Twenty cars took the green with nineteen of the still running at the finish. Rookie Troy Gessner blew a motor in heat race and was done for the evening.
The May 19 race was the first in the CLS Shootout Series. The popular non-winged cars make the "traditional" trip over the Memorial Day Weekend to the Rice Lake Speedway and Eagle Valley Speedway on Saturday and Sunday May 26-27.
