Biggest Career Win for Jamey Ogston at Cedar Lake Speedway
What a night! Picking up his biggest win of his young racing career so far, Duluth driver Jamey Ogston topped a tremendous battle with Derrik Lusk of Jackson at the Cedar Lake Speedway with an impressive victory in the 25 lap UMSS POWRi Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series feature race during Midwest Power Series action. His trip to Rock Auto Victory Lane came nearly three years to the day after his first sprint car win at North Central Speedway, and it certainly provided some memorable moments for the Boss Hogg Night promotion by Donnohue Designs Racing. Ogston became the fourth driver to win a Midwest Power Series event this season and also kept him in contention for the UMSS POWRi Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series championship. The win paid "The Iceman" $1,500 for his efforts.
Several strong competitors were on hand on a warm July evening, as nineteen winged 360 sprint cars signed in to do battle at the popular western Wisconsin track. Heat race winners included Ryan Bickett, making his first-ever appearance at the Cedar Lake Speedway, in the Al Parker Engines/Pirtek Fluid Transfer Solutions first heat, defending UMSS champion and two-time Midwest Power Series champion Chris Graf in the Al Parker Engines/Rock Auto second heat, and another young gun James Broty in the Al Parker Engines/GRP Motorsports third heat. Each heat winner earned $100 from Al Parker Engines of Newton, Iowa. Jody Rosenboom of Rock Rapids, Iowa fell victim to an unfortunate turn of events when he went for a wild ride entering turn three in the second heat after contact with Geoff Dodge. Rosenboom's car was destroyed. The $100 Blaine Brothers Hooked Up Award administered through DDR went to Rosenboom. Jody indicated he would be back out this coming Friday at Jackson for the big $5,000 to win Barb Wieskus Memorial Midwest Power Series event with his second car. Rosenboom was not injured.
A very strong run in the six lap Al Parker Engines Dash for Cash saw James Broty earn the right to start on the pole for the 25 lap main event. Broty earned $200 from Al Parker Engines. Neo Electrical Solutions, a sponsor on Chase Viebrock's car, paid $100 for second through fourth in the dash which went to Ogston, Eric Lutz and Geoff Dodge. The finish of the dash at Midwest Power Series events determines the starting positions for the top three rows in the feature. Graf and Bickett would occupy row three. The remainder of the feature lineup was determined by passing and finishing points in the heats.
With a couple of young, up and coming drivers on the front row, Broty and Ogston brought the field to life at the drop of the green flag for what would be a very entertaining 25 laps of racing action. Ogston grabbed the early lead over Broty with Eric Lutz a close third. Lutz moved by Broty a few laps later and began his bid for the lead. On lap five, Lutz moved past Ogston for the top spot. A lap later, Lutz got into turn four a little hot while trying to fend off Ogston and looped his car. Dodge also spun around, as the yellow light blinked on. Those two cars tagged the tail for the restart.
Ogston assumed the top spot again and led laps 7-10. The caution flag waved again with eleven laps in the books for two-time UMSS champion Ryan Bowers who stopped in turn two. Bowers returned from the work area in the nick of time to join the field for the restart. Defending Midwest Power Series champion Derrik Lusk was on the move forward from his tenth starting position and got by Broty for second on lap 12. Chris Graf was also making his presence felt in the battle for the top three spots. Lusk got around Ogston to lead lap 18. On the next lap, Reed Allex had something break in his steering which caused his car to turn up into the concrete wall in the turn two. Allex executed a slow roll over after bouncing off the wall to bring out the red flag. As the cars were refiring, Bowers suddenly pulled to the infield and was done for the night.
The battle for the lead resumed and provided several exciting moments. Lusk led lap 19, but Ogston came back to regain the lead on lap 20. The yellow light blinked on for the final time with 20 laps scored when Broty, who was in fourth at the time and trying hard to rejoin the battle for the top three spots, spun around exiting off of turn two. Broty restarted at the back of the field. The final five laps would see Ogston hold off Lusk for the popular victory. Lusk rode home a close second with Graf in third. Eric Lutz recovered from his lap 6 spin and drove back up to fourth at the checkers. Picking up his second $200 GRP Motorsports/Minnesota Mafia Hard Charger Award in as many races, Chase Viebrock once again came from 17th to 5th. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Bickett, Broty, Brandon Halverson, Skylar Prochaska and Dave Glennon.
The Rock Auto Victory Lane celebration was memorable for Ogston and included some great items donated by DDR for the Boss Hogg promotion. The white caddy with horns on the front was part of the celebration, as photo opportunities were plentiful for the top three finishers. Champagne bottles, hats and so forth went to the top three. Announcer Chris Stepan interviewed Ogston, Lusk and Graf. It all topped off a memorable evening and win for Jamey Ogston who is always smiling through the ups and the downs that racing brings. The luster of this win will live on for days to come for The Iceman.
The UMSS POWRi Lucas Oil winged sprints have a weekend off before returning to the Cedar Lake Speedway for another CLS Shootout race on July 28. The Midwest Power Series will be using their third rain date of the season at Jackson on Friday July 20, as a very strong field of cars is expected to be on hand for the Barb Wieskus Memorial race.
