Richert Survives Rain For Mighty Axe Win

Mother Nature dumped several inches of rain on the North Central Speedway just before the Challenge races were scheduled to start during the running of the 14th Annual Mighty Axe Nationals on Saturday September 5. With no chance to resume racing action for the evening, the planned two-day show was condensed to one day on Sunday and resumed from where it was left off the previous night. Jerry Richert, Jr. raced to his second win of the season in the 25 lap feature on Sunday to claim his third career Mighty Axe trophy in Rock Auto Victory Lane. The hot and humid weekend was plagued with rainy weather each evening, but the Sunday night show was able to be completed even though rain was in the area.

A small turnout of UMSS winged sprints resulted in just one heat race; however, a couple of cars came late and two Challenge races were scheduled. The heat race was won by Richert on Saturday before the monsoon hit. Reed Allex picked up his first-ever sprint car win when he topped the first Challenge race on Sunday. Jared Goerges, who was late arriving on Saturday, won the second Challenge race on Sunday. Tony Norem showed up on Sunday, but his day was done early when he crashed in the first Challenge race. Jamey Ogston had motor problems on Saturday in the heat race and did not return on Sunday. 2015 UMSS Rookie of the Year Jake Lempelius was on hand Saturday but could not return for the Sunday completion of the program.

The final weekend of the season for the UMSS winged sprints is a big one. The 55 lap $5,500-to-win Earl Kouba Memorial is slated for Friday night September 11 at the St. Croix Valley Raceway followed by the annual appearance and season-ending show for the UMSS at the Richert Memorial on Saturday night September 12 at the Cedar Lake Speedway. The final weekend will feature championship battles in the season points as well as the Midwest Power Series title on Friday night. It should prove to be a great weekend for area sprint car racing fans!
