Wampler Rallies from 18th into Top 10 with ASCS Sooner Region at Lawton

Inside Line Promotions – LAWTON, Okla. (Aug. 24, 2014) – Cody Wampler capped last weekend with his first top 10 of the season in his ASCS sprint car.

Wampler, who competed in an ASCS Sooner Region doubleheader on Friday and Saturday for the first time in more than two months, recorded his fifth total top 10 on Saturday at Lawton Speedway.

“We were a lot better than the night before,” he said.

Following a fifth-place finish in his heat race on Saturday, Wampler charged from 18th to ninth place during the main event.

“I think about 15 laps in we had a red flag and I was still 13th or 14th,” he said. “After that was when we started moving. If we had a few more laps we could have got by a few more cars. We made pretty good progress. For as bad as we were the night before we were pretty pleased with Saturday.”

The weekend kicked off on Friday at Red River Speedway in Wichita Falls, Texas.

“The first night we were just awful,” he said. “It was the first time I’d had the ASCS car out since the very first show. The track was pretty much bone slick in the heat race and we had no drive whatsoever.”

Wampler finished fifth in his heat race, which lined him up on the outside of the eighth row for the main event.

“We started in the back of the feature and still weren’t very good,” he said. “It was one of the dustiest races I’ve ever seen. It was almost bad enough I considered pulling off before we ever started. You couldn’t see five feet in front of you or the wall.”

Wampler rallied toward the top 10 during the first half of the race before he collided with a spinning car with approximately 10 laps remaining. He decided to call it a night and was credited with a 17th-place finish.

“We weren’t going forward and after a close call I didn’t want to risk tearing anything up so we parked it,” he said.

Wampler will return to Lawton Speedway this Saturday in the champ sprints class.
