Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Miss. (July 7, 2021) – Marshall Skinner scored a pair of second-place finishes in USCS Series competition last weekend at Old No. 1 Speedway on Friday and at Magnolia Motor Speedway on Sunday.

“I really should’ve won both of them,” he said. “I led each race, but lapped traffic got me both nights.”

A run from third to first in his heat race at Old No. 1 Speedway in Harrisburg, Ark., made Skinner the high-point driver on Friday. When the zero pill was drawn for the feature inversion it placed him on the pole for the night’s main event.

“I led the first 21 of 25 laps and raced side by side with Derek Hagar for about 15 of them,” he said. “Then I had trouble getting around a lapped car. I tried to pass him at exactly the wrong moment. I zigged when I should have zagged and that let Derek by. Derek told me after the race he couldn’t have passed me if it wasn’t for the other car.”

Two days later Skinner once again qualified for the feature inversion after advancing from fifth to third in his heat race. Ranked fourth in points, he found himself starting on the front row again when the four-car inversion was drawn.

“I led about the first 10 or 12 laps before a lapped car slowed me,” he said. “Columbus is a high-momentum track and I lost that momentum when I tried to slide him and didn’t quite make it, leaving me in the slick. That was when Derek got around me on the high side.

“Then, for some reason, the car I was trying to lap decided to follow Derek right in his tire tracks. So while I was still working to get around him, Howard Moore got by me. Howard ended up getting the win after Derek broke.”

The finishes extended Skinner’s streak to four consecutive runs of first or second place.

“I’m really happy with the way things are going now,” he said. “I feel like I have a lot of momentum now. My car is really comfortable. The motor is running good and the shock package I have really fits me.”

Skinner’s successful weekend came despite being without the aid of his regular crew member.

“The guy who’s been helping me was gone so my pit crew was my wife, who has an injured foot in a boot, and my two 8-year-old boys,” he said. “We didn’t race Saturday because we spent 14 hours at the go-kart races with them. They did really well. They both finished in the top three in both of their classes.”
Up next for Skinner will be a visit to I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark., on Saturday.
