Shaffer scores first All Star win of 2010 in Canada

GRANDBY, QUEBEC, CANADA (6-7-10) – By Brian Liskai – Tim Shaffer picked up his first O’Reilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions feature win of 2010 Monday nightAutodrome-Grandby 2010 at Autodrome Grandby Speedway, passing Jessica Zemken on a lap 14 and held off the young lady on several restarts for his 20th career All Star victory in front of a packed grandstands.

In the last three All Star events, Shaffer, the defending series champion and current point leader, has now recorded a win and a pair of runner-up finishes.

Twenty-two cars made the trip to Quebec, Canada, for the first ever appearance of the All Stars at the half-mile track. Following a day of travel, the All Stars will compete at Fonda Speedway in New York on Wednesday.

Monday’s 30-lap feature kicked off with Connecticut’s David Gravel racing into a commanding lead. However, disaster struck for the young Gravel on the second lap, as he got upside down in turn two. On the restart, Zemken, who won an Empire Super Sprints (ESS) feature at Grandby just this past Friday, raced out front. A caution on lap 14 for Daniel Lampron slowed on the back stretch, bringing out the caution. All Star Rookie of the Year point leader Cap Henry also stopped on the back stretch during the yellow flag.

On the restart Shaffer, “The Steel City Outlaw,” blasted around Zemken in his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook Motorsports machine to take the lead. A caution with eight laps remaining for Andrew Ranger would bunch up the field, but Shaffer’s Kistler Engine was too strong as he pulled away from Zemken again. The young lady from Sprakers, New York, who took an ESS victory just Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway her home state, would have one more shot at Shaffer as All Star Rookie of the Year candidate Jared Ridge slowed just past the flag stand with five laps to go, bringing out the caution.

Again on the restart Shaffer was just too strong, pulling away. Just as Shaffer was coming to the checkered flag, Jeff Taylor flipped right in front of the leader, causing heavy damage to the fence on the inside wall – Taylor walked away uninjured.

Following Shaffer across the line was Zemken, Pennsylvanian Aaron Ott, two-time All Star champion Greg Wilson and young Danny Holtgraver who has now scored two straight top five finishes with the All Stars.

“That was a very fast, tricky race track. You had to pick your line carefully every lap,” said Shaffer beside his Kistler Racing Products, Technique Roofing backed #83. “It’s great to get that first All Star win…we’ve been so close. Brian (Kemenah, chief mechanic) has had the car great all year…the driver just finally got his head out of his butt and drove it hard. We got some breaks to go our way tonight…everything fell into place.”

Pennsylvania Posse member Fred Rahmer made the trip north, but scratched out of the A-main after flipping in his heat.
