Vandervere Gets Second IRA Win
Matt Vandervere defends his home turf against The Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprints.
Matt Vandervere utilized the high side at Wilmot Raceway to fend off Scotty Thiel for the duration of the 30 lap IRA feature. This would be Vandervere’s second career win with the series, both coming at the Wilmot Raceway.
Thiel started the night out strong setting quicktime in Osborn and Son Trucking Qualifying. The gladiator Ben Schmidt would time in 2nd over Illinois drivers Jim Moughan and Jake Blackhurst. 3 time Wilmot track champion Jeremy Schultz would round out the top 5.
Heat Race 1 action saw last weeks Wilmot Raceway 410 winner Steve Meyer take the early lead. Meyer would hold the lead for much of the race but in the closing laps Thiel would muscle past the black and white 85m of Steve Meyer and pick up the win. Meyer settled for 2nd over Blackhurst. A pair of Scott’s finished out the top 5 with Biertzer ahead of Uttech.
Heat 2 saw a pair of 10s start on the front row as Brandon McMullen and Vandervere brought the field to green. For the first half of the race McMullen would lead into turn 1 where Vandevere would throw a slide job but McMullen would cross under Matty V and take the lead back. Around the halfway point Vandervere was finally able to wrestle the lead away from McMullen and set sail. As the checkered flag flew it was a trio of Wilmot stand outs at the front as Vandervere led Raymond Hensley and Jeremy Schultz across the line. Jake Blackhurst would settle for 4th and Brandon McMullen would be regulated to a 5th place finish.
Mike Reinke used his front row starting spot to take the early lead in heat Race 3 and never looked back. Behind Reinke’s yellow numbered 02 would be Russel Borland and 2 time IRA champion Scotty Neitzel. Jim Moughan would finish 4th and Kris Spitz rounded out the top 5.
B main action saw Wayne Modjeski drive from 5th to the lead and pick up the win. Behind him would be Jereme Schroeder and the golden state driver Austin Deblauw. Indiana’s Brinton Marvel in just his 7th 410 sprint car race would finish 4th followed by Keith Fellner.
The A main was exciting as Matt Vandervere jumped out to the early lead over Scotty Thiel. Vandevere was able to create a gap between him and the white and yellow 64 until they entered lapped traffic. Thiel would use lapped traffic to sneak past the Grandstand Video machine of Vandervere but it would not last long and Matty V was able to put a slider on Thiel and regain the lead. Thiel would continue to follow Vandervere through traffic but could never find a way back around him. As the checkered flag waved it would be Matt Vandervere victorious for the 2nd time in his career over Thiel and Jeremy Schultz. Steve Meyer utilized the bottom of the race track to drive from 11th to 4th and Jake Blackhurst who ran 3rd much of the race would be forced to settle for 5th.
