Inside Line Promotions – PARK CITY, Kan. (April 2, 2024) – Dominic Scelzi tied for the second-most positions gained during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event last Saturday at 81 Speedway.
Scelzi charged from 23rd to 11th in the World of Outlaws Wichita Sprint Car Showdown feature during the lone World of Outlaws race of the weekend after Friday’s race at Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Okla., was cancelled because of high winds.
Scelzi opened Saturday’s program by qualifying 14th quickest in his group. He then finished where he started – seventh – in a heat race to line up in the fourth row in the Last Chance Showdown. Scelzi quickly advanced to sixth before using a strong restart to power into a transfer position as he finished third, moving himself into the back of the main event.
“We’ve been working really hard, but we don’t seem to have the mile per hour until the track slicks off,” he said. “I feel really good in the car. We have a good balance and we’ve been racing strong. We’re way better than our results have shown.”
Scelzi gained a few positions early before bringing out a caution, which forced him to restart at the back of the pack.
“We got into an infield tire early and that bent the front axle back,” he said. “We were able to recover and get through the field. I could run the top or the bottom. I felt really maneuverable. Whenever the car in front of me went to the bottom I went to the top and vice versa. We have a great balance.”
Scelzi overcame the incident by hustling to an 11th-place showing, which tied his season-best run with the World of Outlaws.
Another weekend in the Midwest is on tap featuring World of Outlaws races this Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway near Osborn, Mo., during the World of Outlaws Wildcat Showdown and Saturday at Arrowhead Speedway in Colcord, Okla., during the World of Outlaws Jason Johnson Classic.
Scelzi placed 14th during his only appearance at U.S. 36 Raceway in August 2020. Saturday will mark his debut at Arrowhead Speedway.
