Inside Line Promotions – BRANDON, S.D. (Sept. 9, 2020) – Trey Starks captured his best World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series result of the season on Sunday at Huset’s Speedway.

The Gobrecht Motorsports driver hustled to a 12th-place outing, which was his best run with ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt’ since winning a preliminary night of the famed Knoxville Nationals in August 2019.

“I felt like I had my program together more and was a little better in qualifying,” he said. “We were eighth in our group, but the top 10 were all within a tenth of a second. In the heat race we started fourth and got shuffled back to sixth, but I ended up fighting my way back to fourth, locking us into the feature.”

Starks lined up on the inside of the eighth row for the A Main.

“It was a really fun feature,” he said. “There was a lot of stuff going on and hard racing back through the field. We were up toward the top 10 and back as far as 18th or 19th. Our car really came on at the end. I committed to the high side and I felt like we gained a lot at the end, including getting the 12th position at the line. It was probably the most fun I’ve had in a car all year. We don’t get to do much short track racing so that was fun to end the weekend like that, especially against that level of competition.”

The strong run came on the heels of a frustrating night at Huset’s Speedway. Starks qualified 31st quickest and placed eighth in a heat race on Saturday. That lined him up in the middle of the pack in the Last Chance Showdown.

“We hurt ourselves in qualifying,” he said. “I’ll take the blame. I just didn’t put two good laps together. I was trying to get too much out of it so that put us behind. We couldn’t get anywhere in the heat race. We had a really good car in the LCS. We started back there a ways and worked our way to fifth. We were looking good with a restart with two laps to go. I felt like I was in the position to pick the opposite lane than the guy in front of me did. Unfortunately, we ended up having the right rear tire go down under caution. It ended up being a cracked wheel that was letting the air out. That was a bummer for sure.”

Starks nearly kicked off the weekend by recording a victory at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., last Thursday when he piloted his family car. He qualified second quickest and placed third in a heat race before a move for the lead in the feature resulted in a DNF.

“The polesitter got the jump on me on the start and I followed him through traffic,” he said. “We got to Lap 15 and had an opening in traffic. I pulled the trigger and put a slider on him. I cleared him, but we blew through the cushion and got upside down. It was a bold move. I had followed him for a few laps. The track was fast around the top. I saw my opening and I took it. We don’t get to run my car very often and I don’t run it to run second. We made a risky move and we paid for it. However, I was satisfied to go out there and be competitive with a car that doesn’t run very often.”

Gobrecht Motorsports will be off this weekend before returning to Huset’s Speedway on Sept. 18-19 for the DeKalb/Asgrow Power Series Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores featuring the Midwest Sprint Touring Series and the Midwest Power Series.
