Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 10, 2019) – Although it was a trying weekend for Trey Starks, he and Gobrecht Motorsports made the Champion Racing Oil National Open main event and moved forward.

“We didn’t qualify the best to put ourselves in a good position either night, but we got back to where we were supposed to be on Saturday,” Starks said. “We probably needed to start there and progress a little better.”

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series action at Williams Grove Speedway began on Friday with Starks uncharacteristically qualifying 23rd quickest in his group. He advanced from eighth to sixth place in a heat race, from third to win the D Main and from 13th to sixth in the C Main.

“We went out late in our group and just weren’t very good in qualifying, but we got the car better throughout the night,” he said. “We moved forward in the heat race, won the D Main and we came up to sixth in the C Main, but just ran out of time.”

Saturday started off smoother for Starks, who timed in ninth quickest in his group. However, a fourth-place result in a heat race relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown. Starks won the race to garner a transfer into the A Main.

“We tuned up for the B Main and got the car really, really good in clean air,” he said. “We ran some great laps that were competitive in times with drivers in the dash. We knew we had a fast race car. I tried to move around toward the end because I knew we couldn’t do the same things in the A Main since we’d be starting in dirty air.”

Starks brought out a caution early in the race and was forced to restart at the back of the field, which was deeper than a normal race after multiple provisionals were used. He was able to rally up to 18th by the time the checkered flag was waved. It marked his career-best result during the National Open finale.

“I got into the wall racing with some guys at the start of the feature,” he said. “We had to come to the work area. We changed some parts, but the axle was bent as well. We got it better on the open red, but unfortunately the track took rubber toward the end of the race.

“All in all the car was good in the feature, which we were happy with. I made a few mistakes, which cost us. We had the car where we wanted it. It took a lot of work and frustration to get there so it was nice to have a solid performance.”

Starks will likely take the next three weeks off before resuming competition Oct. 25-26 at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa., during the Nittany Showdown with the World of Outlaws.
