Inside Line Promotions – ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 22, 2019) – Saturday was a special night for the Swindell Family.

Sammy Swindell guided the Swindell SpeedLab backed team owned by Kevin and Jordan Swindell to a seventh-place finish during the famed Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway.

“Overall, I think if you would have told me last Wednesday that I was going to run seventh I would have been alright with that,” Kevin Swindell said. “When we did this, to me as much as it was about being successful, it was about putting him in those situations and giving him a good shot. Being able to have the whole moment of everything and prerace and having him enjoy it was the biggest thing. So much of the time over the years even when he’s had good runs it hasn’t been fun for him. I’m trying to make him enjoy it again and that was the biggest part.”

It was a strong run that capped a busy weekend of learning. It began on Thursday as Sammy Swindell qualified eighth quickest before he advanced from third to second place in a heat race. A sixth-place finish in a dash preceded an 18th-place outing in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event.

“The first night we qualified pretty good and had a good heat to get us into the dash,” he said. “We drew the pole, but Kevin hasn’t run his car at places where the air is as bad as it was. I made a couple of changes to the car and I didn’t like it. It just got us off for the main event. I talked him into getting the car way too tight and a couple of things we did just wasn’t quite right.”

A bad pill draw doomed the team on Friday.

“We were the last one in the first group in qualifying,” Sammy Swindell said. “We qualified 19th and that buried us. We passed two cars in the heat and the C Main. We got up to third, but they only took two.”

It clicked better on Saturday during the Kings Royal as the team qualified 32nd quickest, which garnered the pole position for the final heat race. Swindell led the distance to earn the win and the pole position for the 40-lap main event.

“We didn’t get to run a feature with a full fuel tank to go off for Saturday night,” he said. “We didn’t want to be too tight and we wound up being too free. It was good for the first 10 laps, but I could tell on the second lap that we were going to struggle. Being in front I didn’t know what the pace was behind us and that’s one of the disadvantages of being in the front. You don’t know if the track changes or the line changes. (Logan) Schuchart got by and I tried to run the line he was running, but we weren’t faster. We kind of hung on there. I was too loose to get in and across the corner and stay on the gas like the other guys. That’s a part of it.”

Swindell led the first 10 laps before he finished seventh. It marked his 18th career top 10 during the event.

“For us to get as close as we did on our second attempt to run a main event was pretty remarkable,” he said. “If we could have started where we finished we would have been a whole lot better off, but that’s what we had to go through in that amount of time. We were way better on Saturday, but we needed to be better than six other cars. I think that’s remarkable that the guys that have run all year and most of the teams that have been together for most years, to even be in the ballpark with how the cars are now is remarkable. I don’t think people understand how touchy they can be. It will help us for when we run together in the future.”
