Brian Brown Overcomes Adversity to Earn Top Five During FVP Outlaw Showdown Finale

Inside Line Promotions – LAS VEGAS (March 4, 2018) – Brian Brown was a contender throughout the FVP Outlaw Showdown last week at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas.

“Our FVP and Casey’s General Stores sprint car unloaded really fast out of the trailer,” he said. “We were fastest in hot laps and set quick time in our group (on Wednesday). When you get on those half-mile tracks our Charlie Garrett engines are phenomenal. I have the best engine builder in the country and it shows on those half miles. We went out late, but were able to set quick time so that’s saying something.”

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series doubleheader began on Wednesday with Brown setting quick time in his group despite being the last car out to qualify. He then won a heat race from the pole position before claiming the dash after a favorable dash draw lined him up on the outside of the front row.

“That pill draw for the dash was really important,” he said. “I got by Sheldon (Haudenschild) on the start and won the dash, which was big. FVP is the presenting sponsor of that race and we needed to get our FVP car up front.”

The dash triumph lined Brown up on the pole for the 30-lap A Main.

“We were going as hard as we needed to go early on,” he said. “One thing we can’t control is bad luck. I could tell my right rear tire was getting low about six or seven laps into it. You just hope it stays low, but ours let go.”

Brown led the first 10 laps before the tire blew on Lap 11. His crew replaced the tire in the work area and Brown restarted at the back of the field.

“We went to the back and were able to get to 14th,” he said. “It wasn’t a horrible finish, but when you’re looking at a feature win that’s not the result you’re happy with.”

The team returned to the half-mile oval on Thursday for the FVP Outlaw Showdown finale. Once again, Brown was fast as he timed in third quickest in his group before winning a heat race. He pulled the No. 2 in the dash draw for the second straight night and was in a battle for the dash win throughout the first half of the race.

“We got another really good draw for the dash and we had a car that was possible of passing Aaron (Reutzel) to win,” he said. “He switched lanes and then I switched lanes. I took a bad angle at the corner. When I got to the exit the cushion (in turns three and four) was built up too high. I hit it wrong and it sucked us into the fence. That may have cost us an opportunity for the race win.”

The front end was damaged in the incident and Brown was credited with an eighth-place finish in the dash. That lined him up on the outside of the fourth row for the main event.

“Chad Morgan and Michael Williams didn’t give up,” he said. “They fixed it and started working on what we needed to in the A Main. We had a good run and were able to go from eighth to fourth, which is really good at an Outlaws race. I felt like on that last double-file restart we might have had a chance to get a podium, but the inside row didn’t get going as well as I hoped.”

Brown rallied to post a fourth-place finish, which marked his first top five of the season. It gives him a top-five result during five of his last eight races at the track.

“With FVP being the partner of the event and having an opportunity to win both nights, I feel like we had a good showing and we have some good momentum right now,” he said.

Saturday’s SoCal Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, Calif., rained out.

Brown will return to action this Friday and Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., with the World of Outlaws. His career-best result at the oval of seventh place came in 2016.

“We’ve had some decent success there,” he said. “I think we have a good package to go there and be competitive.”
