Shark Racing’s Kings Royal Recap [Week 21]

4 Races in 5 Days Would Make Up the Kickoff to The “Month of Money”

Race 1 Tuesday – Brad Doty Classic
The Shark Racing Team would roll into Attica with a little bit of confidence knowing that Jacob Allen had one of, if not the fastest car at this race the previous year. As time trials got underway, Jacob would prove to be quick again, posting a time of 12.995 placing him 7th in group B of Craftsman World of Outlaw’s time trials. Logan Schuchart would fight fuel issues and would get the night started off on the wrong foot with a time of 13.305; he would place 24th in group B.

An amazing car count would see 58 sprint cars in competition on Tuesday night as the series paid tribute to one of the sports biggest stars, Brad Doty. The night would shake out 6 Heat races to get the field sorted for Main competition. Jacob Allen would roll of 3rd in the 4th heat race. After a few hot and heavy laps Jacob would have a mishap in turn three, spinning the car and would resume competition from the back of the field. A 7th place finish wasn’t quite what Jacob was hoping for, but a strong Time Trial run would be a saving grace for the 1a, placing him on the outside of row one for the Last Chance Showdown.

Logan Schuchart would fire off from the 8th starting position in the 6th heat race. After a flurry of furious laps between Logan, Greg Wilson, and Tanner Thorson, Logan and Tanner would make contact while racing three wide for position. Logan would make a charge from the rear of the heat race, but with just ten laps he would have to settle for a 7th place finish.

That 7th place finish would have Logan starting from the pole in the D-Main, and again a fuel issue would be the determining factor in Logan Schuchart’s night. The car would stall out while leading the D-Main and end Logan Schuchart’s charge for the C-Main.

Jacob Allen would start from the second position in the Craftsman Last Chance Showdown and at the drop of the green flag it was clear to see the car had speed. Jacob drove away from the field, but the caution would fly, and we would restack the field. Again Jacob would pull the front end off the ground and set sail on the field, but again the caution would fly. Jacob would for a third time assume the lead and then fueling problems would again plague the Shark Racing Team effectively ending the night for Jacob Allen as his car would come to a stall and end his push for the A-Main at the Brad Doty Classic.

It was later discovered that there was a fuel measurement issue, the problem was corrected immediately but not before it could end the team’s chances at the Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park.

Race Recap
ATTICA, OH – July 11, 2017 – Tim Shaffer dominated the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park, but David Gravel’s late surge allowed him to take the lead coming to the white flag and lead the final two laps to steal the victory. It was Gravel’s 10th win of the season, setting a new career-high season wins record for the Watertown, CT driver. Daryn Pittman rounded out the podium after a thrilling late battle with Rico Abreu and Brent Marks. Brad Sweet earned a fourth-place finish after starting 25th when he took a provisional starting spot. Abreu rounded out the top-five finishers.

Race 2 – Thursday, Eldora Speedway -The Jokers Wild
A long day of parking lot maintenance would have the Shark Racing Team prepared to hit the famed 1/2 mile high banks of Eldora Speedway to kick off the three days 34th annual Kings Royal Weekend. Things would, however, get off to a slow, dreary start, as rain moved into the Speedway moments before the heat in the motors the cars were loaded up, and the waiting game had begun. Some four hours had passed, and rain was somewhat persistent on and off, but the Eldora crew, Roger Slack and Tony Stewart gave it the green light at almost 10:00 PM the Shark Racing guy’s were taking Hotlaps and gearing up for time trials.

Single car qualification would be bad fast and oh so close to that 12.707 track record time laid down by the crowd pleaser, Craig Dollanski. Your quick-time of the night would be recorded by David Gravel at 12.847 seconds. Logan Schuchart would lay down an impressive 6th place lap at 13.017 seconds. Jacob Allen would time in at the 22nd position in group B.

Heat race action would hit the track, and it was hammer down and hold on conditions. The earlier rain had the Eldora Speedway in an exceptionally tacky state. Jacob Allen would fire off from 11th in the 2nd Heat Race; he would finish 12th in the narrow conditions. Logan Schuchart would start 3rd in heat race number 5, and after a bobble, on the start, he would hold on to a 5th place finish. That heat race finish would give Logan the 20th place starting position in the nights A-Main, Jacob Allen would retire for the night with mechanical troubles.

An amazing crowd hung in through the elements, and the delays and they were rewarded with some great high-speed racing action at the high banked half mile of Eldora. “The Mad Man” Kerry Madsen would dominate the event putting on a clinic as he ripped the cushion of the Eldora Speedway, Logan Schuchart would be one of the few cars making moves forward early as he had a thrilling battle with Rico Abreu. What was an impressive charge would come to an end late as the right front axle boss would break causing Logan to crash into the inside of turn four. Logan Schuchart would be credited with 20th place.

Race Recap
ROSSBURG, OH — July 13, 2017 — Kerry Madsen started on the pole for the 30-lap Jokers Wild Feature after winning the Craftsman Club Dash and then was simply dominant as he lead every single lap on the way to the victory. The win was Madsen’s fourth of the season with the Outlaws as he held off fellow front row starter Brad Sweet. Madsen overcame an injury to his right hand after a rock cut him in the opening five laps. Brian Brown raced to a strong third after a thrilling battle with David Gravel. Tim Shaffer drove a consistent race to a fourth-place finish while Gravel rounded out the top-five.

Race 3 – Friday, Eldora Speedway – The Knight Before
After a full morning of maintenance at the speedway, the team was ready to attack the Eldora Speedway for the Knight Before, which is day two of the three day Kings Royal Weekend.

Night number two would again show fast track conditions for time trials, as Donny Schatz would be quickest overall with a time of 13.057. Logan Schuchart would time into 6th position in Group B, and Jacob would fall into 11th position in Group B.

Heat race action would prove track position to be key. Logan Schuchart would start second in the 6th heat, and he would finish there behind Tim Shaffer. Jacob Allen would slide two positions in heat race 5 for a 6th place finish. Mechanical issues would end Jacob Allens night.

The large crowd would rise to its feet as Johny Gibson made the call, 26 sprint cars aligned to do battle. As the green flag flew, it was evident Christopher Bell would be a force to be reckoned with. Logan Schuchart would have traction early on as he moved up to the 8th position by lap 12. A caution with nine laps to go would be the first thing able to slow down race leader Christopher Bell. Perennial Outlaw champion Donny Schatz would give Christopher a run for his money in the late stages, but Christopher was just too good at the Knight Before the Kings Royal as he would claim the A-Main checkered flag. Logan Schuchart would record a 12th place finish for the Shark Racing Team as tire wear issues cost him a few spots late in the running.

Race Recap
ROSSBURG, OH — July 14, 2017 — Christopher Bell took the lead from Brad Sweet in turn three and then held off a surging Donny Schatz on a restart with nine laps to go to win the Knight Before the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway. Bell, who lined up for the 30-lap main event in third, engaged in a thrilling battle with Brian Brown in the opening laps before catching and then passing Brad Sweet in lapped traffic. Schatz surged in the middle of the race as the track continued to slick off and put his best towards Bell, but fell 0.591 seconds short of the victory. Brad Sweet earned his second straight podium finish with a third-place result while Ian Madsen and Brown rounded out the podium finishers.

Race 4 – Saturday, Eldora Speedway – 34th Annual Kings Royal.
The first crown jewel of the Craftsman World of Outlaws 2017 schedule was up for grabs Saturday night as a record Kings Royal crowd poured into the gates. The Shark Racing team was focused in on making big improvements and delivering solid performances to kick off the month of money.

The racing surface was as good as it gets all night long during the Kings Royal. If you’re not familiar with the Kings Royal, it has a different format than a standard World of Outlaws Show, top 30 cars in time trials are inverted and run heads up in heat race competition. Jacob Allen would record the 11th quickest time overall, and Logan Schuchart would sort out in 28th position. Both times would give the Shark Racing drivers a significant jump on the night with Jacob lining up in the 4th in Heat 5 and Logan Schuchart firing off from the pole in heat race number 4.

As the green flag flew on heat race number 4 Logan Schuchart and Jac “The Wild Child” Haudenschild would have the fans on their feet as they exchanged slide jobs back and forth competing for the top spot. A mid race caution would allow the crowd to catch their breath and when the race went back green Logan Schuchart’s car would misfire dropping him back to fourth. However, Logan would rally with big moves around Ian Madsen and under Brent Marks and would again start the pursuit of “The Wild Child.” Logan However would run out of laps and have to settle for a second place finish.

Jacob Allen would fire off from the 4th position and would be shuffled out of a transfer spot on the initial start of heat race number five. Jacob would show good speed, but with a rough start to the heat race, he would settle into the 7th position. That finish would have him lined up in the 5th position in the C-Main event. Jacob However wouldn’t make the call for the C-Main as he would retire from the night’s action with mechanical difficulties.

If you have never been to a crown jewel event with the Craftsman World of Outlaws, there is a different feel in the air as the cars come into four-wide formations, it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The record standing room only crowd was on its toes as Johny gave the famous call and as the drivers lit up the 900-plus horsepower engines it was time for the 34th annual running of the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway!

At the drop of the green race rookie, Cole Duncan would pull out to a steady lead, but it was easy to see Donny Schatz would be a force to contend with during the 40 lap Kings Royal. Logan Schuchart would make an impressive charge early and was up to the 6th position. The track was in perfect condition with multiple racing lanes and impressive passing going on throughout the field. Christopher Bell would run from 20th to the second position and wouldn’t even receive the KSE Hard Charger Award. The KSE Hard Charger of the event would be Ryan Smith, coming from dead last to a 5th position finish. Donny Schatz would take the lead from Cole Duncan, and he would run away and hide from the field to become King Donny the 34th and make a little history by becoming the first driver ever to win the Kings Royal back-to-back! Logan Schuchart would come home in the 12th position and have a pretty clean Kings Royal – “car just felt loose from the drop of the green flag,” said Logan who wasn’t very happy with the casing on his Right Rear Hoosier.

The Shark Racing team is looking forward to the $25,000 to win Don Martin Memorial Cup at Lernerville Speedway in Lerneville Pennsylvania. The team looks forward to the second PA swing of the season allowing them to get organized and build some new cars to take on the second half of the Craftsman World of Outlaws season. Also of note, if you have sprint car experience and are seeking employment working with a world of outlaw team “on the road” e-mail your resume to dan@beardigitaldesigns.com using the subject line “Shark Help.”

Race Recap

ROSSBURG, OH – July 15, 2017 – Donny Schatz made history in the 34th annual Kings Royal when the driver of the No.15 Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing took the lead on lap 14 and led the final 27 laps to become the first back-to-back winner in Kings Royal history. Schatz took the lead from polesitter and Kings Royal rookie Cole Duncan and never looked back as he dominated a caution-free Feature and won by over three seconds.
