Kevin Swindell Rallies at Devil’s Bowl During Texas Outlaw Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 28, 2015) – Although he didn’t register the result he aimed for last weekend, Kevin Swindell showed improvement throughout the Texas Outlaw Nationals.
Swindell, who made his debut driving for Brandon Berryman, fell behind the eight ball from the start of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series doubleheader at Devil’s Bowl Speedway thanks to Mother Nature, which rained out the opening round on Friday.
“Sometimes it takes a while to adjust to a new car and to get everything comfortable,” he said. “If we could have done what we did Saturday on Friday, it would have given us a great opportunity to compete on the second day. Unfortunately, the event was cut to one day so we didn’t have time for a learning curve.”
Swindell opened Saturday’s race by qualifying 21st quickest on the half-mile oval.
“I think we were like 40 points of gear off in qualifying,” he said. “In hot laps we were right around the bottom so we put a little bit of gear in it to run the bottom. When we went out for qualifying everybody had moved up and I knew we were in trouble. It was a really good lap. It just didn’t make the speed.”
He then finished ninth in a heat race before advancing to a third-place result in the Last Chance Showdown, which garnered a transfer into the back of the main event.
“The track was pretty narrow throughout the heat races and the B Main,” he said. “It started to get better for the feature, but we had to start at the back so that made it tough.”
Swindell, who lined up on the inside of the 11th row for the feature, was caught up in an opening-lap crash on the frontstretch. He resumed competition from the back and rallied for a 15th-place result.
“I got to 11th or 12th and I was trying to get by (Johnny) Herrera,” he said. “That’s when Shane (Stewart) and (Donny) Schatz got to us and it got messy for a second. The last five to eight laps I got too free to keep the pace I needed.”
Swindell finished tied for the second-most cars passed and he was one of only three drivers to officially pass more than five cars.
“I want to thank Brandon and his team for the opportunity,” he said. “Things have to go your way to be competitive at Devil’s Bowl and this weekend didn’t fall in our favor. Hopefully we can team up again in the near future and compete for a win.”
