Schulte takes Midwest Modified Feature Win in Exciting and Close Finish.
Ogilvie, MN (June 12) – After a week off from race action, Wagamon’s Ogilvie Raceway was back in action Saturday night with some WISSOTA Dirt Track Racing. Mother nature provided a great day for everyone in attendance, as Andrew Hanson, Travis Schulte, Dave Flynn, Landon Atkinson, Dustin Holtquist and Carter Rieland went home victorious.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks kicked off the night’s feature events, and as the drivers rounded turn four, contact occurred. A couple drivers dropped out of the feature, and when the race resumed, Thomas Worth and Kevin Kramer sped off. Jeff Ekdahl jumped into the lead, Charlie Sheik challenged Worth for second and other drivers battled three and four wide for points. Andrew Hanson slid into the second point and began to chase Ekdahl. Ekdahl’s #11 got loose as he went down the backstretch which allowed Hanson to race to his door. Hanson and Ekdahl remained glued to one another for a couple laps, but Hanson nosed ahead for the lead. One final caution slowed the drivers, but Andrew Hanson kept his foot down and took the win. Jeff Ekdahl, Russell Kostreba, Justin Pogones and Brittany smith grabbed top points.
As the green dropped for the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, they were three wide going into the turn. Jake Smith emerged as the leader, and after a quick caution, Travis Schulte dove low on the track and put pressure on Smith. Smith had a slight lead over Schulte as Zach Benson challenged Matt Baker for third. Benson and Baker slid to Schulte’s door and they raced three wide in the curves. Schulte held the point, but Benson had him on his toes. A series of cautions kept the drivers at a stop and go pace, however as when the race resumed, Smith and Schulte raced door to door. Benson patiently waited for an opening to join the battle and when he saw it, he took it. Smith, Schulte and Benson were three wide in the turns and as the laps went by, Schulte snagged the lead. Benson moved to Schulte’s side and with two laps to go. They remailed nose to nose and drag raced to the waving checker flags. Travis Schulte snagged took the win by 0.114 seconds with Zach Benson, Jake Smith, Matt Baker and Ryan Savoy took top points.
Kevin Schmidt, Andy Grymala and Jared Zimpel raced three wide for the lead as the WISSOTA Super Stocks took the green. Zimpel claimed the lead position with Grymala and Dexton Koch to his rear. Grymala moved to Zimpel’s door and after a couple laps, Grymala broke free of Zimpel and became the leader. One caution slowed the Supers, but when the green reappeared, Grymala and Dave Flynn were door to door for top point. Three laps later, Flynn claimed the lead. Laps went by and the leaders spaced out, but with a few laps to go, Josh Zimpel tracked down Grymala. Andy Grymala held the second point as the race came to an end with Josh Zimpel, Dexton Koch and Kurt Becken rounding out the top five as Dave Flynn rolled his #29F into victory lane.
The WISSOTA Modifieds were next up, and as the green flew, Devin Fouquette took the lead. Chris Mensen moved into second and raced to Fouquette’s outside. Mensen made the pass for first while Jeremy Nelson slid into second. Landon Atkinson started seventh on the field and worked the inner most groove of the track. Atkinson passed Nelson for second and snuck past Menson for the lead. Nelson also passed Menson and chased after Atkinson. Landon Atkinson however set the cruise and took the win. Jeremy Nelson, Chris Mensen, Clayton Wagamon and Devin Fouquette snagged top points.
Dustin Holtquist took the immediate lead as the WISSOTA Mod Four feature began while Dean Larson, Connor Hass and Robert Holtquist battled for second. Robert Holtquist took the runner up point and chased after Dustin, however no one had anything for Dustin and his #5h as he led every lap and took the win. Remaining top points went too, Robert Holtquist, Dean Larson, Tommy Pogones and Garrett Masurka.
The WISSOTA Hornets wrapped up the night’s race program, and as the green dropped, Carter Rieland pulled away with the lead. Other drivers battled for top points as Alex Aderman snagged second and Justin Schelitzche took third. All of a sudden, three cars sat along the wall in turn four and the race went red. All drivers were ok, however as soon as the race resumed, it was back to yellow. Three cautions kept the drivers slow with an assortment of events triggering each caution. Once the race resumed, Rieland was first, Schelitzche was second and drivers were three wide for third. Schelitzche pulled his car into the infield and Randy Jacoboski claimed the runner up spot. Joseph Wilber and Jesse Turnvall battled it out for the third point with laps winding down. Carter Rieland took the checkers with Randy Jacoboski, Joseph Wilber, Mac Johnston and Jesse Turnvall in the top five.
Next week’s Saturday Night Shoot Out will be one for the Sprint Car Fans! The UMSS Winged Sprints and Non-Winged Sprints will be at the Big O in addition to the MSTS 360 Winged and Non-Winged Sprints. The Micro Wing Sprints will also get their chance to round the corners of the Big O and the WISSOTA Hornets will also be in action. Racing will begin at 6:30pm.
