McCarthy Autogroup Opening Weekend of Racing

I-35 Speedway week 1 of the delayed 2020 racing season is in the books, sort of….. Applying the Missouri Governor’s Show Me Recovery Plan, the opening night was split into two race nights, Friday Night May 8 and Saturday May 9. Eight classes, four each night, meant eight features, but moisture interrupted on Saturday Night just as the USRA B Mods took to the track. The USRA features from May 9 will be the opening events on Saturday May 16 before another complete race program.

Social Distancing Friday Night racing began with the Show Me Vintage taking to the track. This “bring back the memories” group of racers competing in racecars which were new 30, 40, or 50 plus years ago, always display nose to tail exciting finishes. Opening night saw Damon Clevenger grab the win.

Several Sport Compact Competitors came to compete for “Opening Night” King of the division. The full field of racers was bested by John Willard from his pole position start. Jason McCaulley and Davis Miller were in a side by side battle on Willard’s rear bumper to provide an exciting close three-way battle.

The Pure Stocks enjoyed three heats of competition. Miciah Hidlebaugh from his outside front row start took the early lead but Brandon Dixon wasted no time moving forward from his fifth row outside position. Once Dixon grabbed the lead the battle for second was on between Hidlebaugh, Bobby Ohrenberg, who started seventh on the field, and Albert Curtis from his 13th position start. Dixon, Hidlebaugh, Ohrenberg, and Curtis was the finishing order of the Pure Stocks.

Closing out the Friday Night portion of the program was the Super Exciting E Mods. The up and coming talent was on display in heat one as youngsters Michael Taylor III and Kameron Hanes put on a great six lap side by side battle. The winner of the heat race was determined by the new Westhold Transponder System with Taylor topping Hanes by .037 of a second. Casey Burnett claimed the second heat race. This set up a fantastic battle to start the E Mod race with the old pro Burnett starting outside second row with the two youngsters to his left on the inside row Taylor and Hanes. Hanes got around Taylor and then inside Burnett to take the lead and ensure he was the opening night E Mod victor.

The second part of the McCarthy Autogroup Night weekend occurred on Saturday. Late Models, USRA B Mods, USRA Stock Cars, and USRA A Mods took their turn at the 3/8-mile-high banks. Like the night before the racing was superb.

Long time Modified Ace and 2002 NASCAR Short Track Series Champion Kerry Davis won the opening night Late Model Heat Race followed by Jonesborough Arkansas driver Steven Crocker. The second Late Model heat was claimed by David Melloway who had Paul Glendenning on his tail. The 15-lap feature event saw Davis grab the early lead and take the win. Lat Year’s Track Champion Tommy Cordray finished second and was closing hard, with Gregg Truelove in third.

The USRA B Modified Heat Races were claimed by Shadren Turner, Cole Campbell, Patrick Royalty, Andy Bryant, and Kris Jackson, a who’s who of USRA B Mods. The Top 18 in passing points along with the Top 3 from each of the two B Features set the field for the 24 car A feature. Steve Clancy, Daniel Harris, and Tyler Cadwallader transferred from the first B feature and Tyler Kidwell, Kenton Allen and Jeff Jackson transferred from the second B Feature. The cars were on the track for the A feature event when the moisture arrived.

The USRA Stock Car Feature is also set where Doug Keller, Jeff Dixon, and Gary Donaldson the three heat race winners will be bringing the field of competitors to the green on May 16.

Leading the field of USRA A Mods to the green on May 16 will be heat race winners Mark Dotson, Darron Fuqua, Gunner Martin, and Chad Lyle.
