Ironman Effort at Airport Raceway
The team’s longest road trip of the season took 6.5 hours west to a doubleheader at the 1/5 mile bull ring of Airport Speedway in Garden City, KS, over the Memorial Day weekend. Fischer Racing appreciates the sacrifices of those that serve in our armed forces and the families that have lost loved ones in the line of duty. Hunter was able to raise $120 for the Wounded Warrior Project this year as his birthday wish through Facebook Fundraisers.
POWRi West & POWRi RMMRA midget series combined forces with the NOW600 series to put on a show for the Garden City, KS crowd. Hunter Fischer pairing up with the Skip’s Performance Corner 600cc micro sprint, to pull off an iron man effort by making all 3 A features in the midget, stock winged, and stock non-wing classes.
Saturday’s heat race action began with the stock 600cc winged class, with Hunter piloting the #17F SPC micro in a 38 car field. Starting 7th in heat race #4, the Honda powered micro was making its way through the field when another driver ran over Hunter’s left side, breaking the fuel injection and ending the race. As a result, Hunter would start 9th in Semi #2 to try for a transfer into the A Feature.
Next up, Hunter jumped into the Flying Tee sponsored midget to compete in the 41 car field. Starting in the 8th position of heat #3, Fischer skillfully piloted the #24 into a 3rd place finish and qualified directly to start in his 1st A Feature of the night.
The SPC mastermind, Skip Wendt, and several team mates were able to pull the wing off and repair the broken injection while Hunter was on the track in the midget. Out of 25 entrants, Hunter started P5 in the 3rd heat. The car was on point and sliced its way into 3rd place, qualifying him with enough passing points to start ninth in the non-wing A Feature (#2 for the night).
Rushing back to have the wing reinstalled onto the #17F for Semi #2, the team needed a 3rd place finish to transfer into the main race. From the 5th row, Hunter was able to deliver the bronze and qualified to start at the back of the field, in the 20th position, for his 3rd A Feature of the night! Coming at heels of the Semis, the stock 600cc wing class was up first for 20 laps around the 1/5 mile track. Becoming the hardest charger of the race, our talented driver passed 11 cars to finish 9th.
Team Fischer’s luck in the midget was determined by the roll of the die. POWRi rolls a giant die before lining up the top 6 qualifiers of the evening. The number shown on the rolled die would invert starting positions and the #4 resulted. The #24 qualified 4th high in points, so that placed the Flying Tee sponsored midget on the pole position! The track was masterfully prepared by Tony Bruce Jr. and stayed tacky all evening, in spite of the 98 degree heat and full sun all day. While it provided for some fantastic racing, the midget crew (aka Dad) guessed incorrectly on setup and gave Hunter a car that couldn’t turn through the corners. Quickly falling back, our pilot was able to adjust the ARS shock package enough to hold onto a 13th place finish. As luck would have it, Hunter was honored with a “13 Award” by the RMMRA in remembrance of their 2015 Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame inductee, Pete Brandenburg, who was an inspiration to the sport and passed away earlier this year. With no rest, Fischer jumped back into the SPC 600cc micro with the wing removed and started the field of 20 from the inside of row 5. Again, the chassis was dialed in and picked off 6 more cars to finish on the podium in 3rd place. This was good enough to lock into the A Feature finale on Sunday night, relieving some stress on the combined race teams!
After 101 competition laps under Hunter’s belt (not including yellow flag laps), our 20 year old driver was ready for the hotel but very satisfied with his accomplishments for the night. Despite some rough situations early, the team made it happen. The micro would not be possible without Skip Wendt of Skip’s Performance Corner (car), Dave Nicholson (motor), and Ryan Cody (wing).
