Hunter Fischer
Port City Homecoming
It was homecoming week for Fischer Racing as the POWRi West midget series visited the 1/8 mile track of Port City Raceway in Tulsa, OK for a Saturday only show. Joining the local micro sprint program, we were able to compete in 2 classes. In addition to driving the Flying Tee sponsored #24 in midget competition, Hunter was able to run the Skip’s Performance Corner #17 micro sprint in the 600cc Outlaw division. Growing up at this famed track over the last 14 years allowed old fans, friends, and family to see the familiar face take to the track like old times. All gathered to cheer on our driver, who is frequently competing on the road.
The heat races for both the Outlaw and Midget were uneventful as both cars were fighting tight handling characteristics by gambling the track would dry out quickly. The track was smooth and held enough moisture to throw us off enough to finish 5th in the respective heat events. Fortunately, that was good enough to make the A Feature in both 600cc Outlaw and POWRi Midget classes.
Running double-duty on the two cars takes a lot of stamina from the driver! By qualifying for both features, Hunter would have to jump straight out of the Outlaw directly into the Midget, completing over 50 laps by the night’s end. Skip Wendt of SPC tuned the #17 Outlaw to meet the demands of the drying track. After taking a spill last week in the Outlaw, Hunter started on the pole due to an inverted point system (low points up front) of 21 cars starting. The car and driver sync’d up and set sail, only to be pulled back by various yellow flags. Leading over half of the race, one flag proved too many as the track champion pulled behind Hunter for the last restart. Hitting his marks and utilizing every bit of moisture remaining on the bottom of each corner, the #17 was able to hold off the hard charger for a couple of laps until making the champ earn the top spot honestly. Taking 2nd place to a great driver is not a bad thing and we are happy to have a good finish for the car owner.
Rushing from one car to the next, the Flying Tee #24 would start in the 14th position of the 21 car Midget field. Similar to the Outlaw race, several yellow flags would show themselves during the A feature. Each time, Hunter was able to methodically make his way through the field. 2 spots, then another 2 spots, then give/take as the lines around the track and lap traffic began to play into the driving strategy. In the end, Fischer made his way up 7 positions to finish in 7th overall. Having a Top 10 after so many hard luck finishes feels great, especially at our home track!
Staff from our sponsors, Flying Tee Golf on the Riverwalk in Jenks and B&C Custom Woodworks, made it out in support of Fischer Racing as well. Fans and drivers were rewarded with Flying Tee Golf coupons by Hunter handing out hundreds of BOGO offers and lunch reward cards throughout the event. Please visit Flying Tee in Jenks for their awesome food during lunch and dinner. Swing a club, watch TV, or play corn hole while you are there as well! Their 2nd birthday bash is coming up on 6/1-6/3. We will be there with the Midget on Saturday, so stop by and say “Hello!” Go to flyingteegolf.com for more information.
The Micro and Midget will both race next in a 2-day show at Garden City, KS on 5/26-5/27.
