EL PASO, Texas (May 25, 2016) A slight change of plans, but it came with success as John Carney II took part in both RaceSaver and ASCS competition this past weekend with his season to date podium count climbing to 11 with a third place finish at the Southern Oklahoma Speedway with the IMCA Sprint Series of Oklahoma.

Originally, the John James Racing No. 4j was to be at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla. on Friday night. However, an illness in the Carney ranks saw the 305cid car come out instead.

Still chasing brake issues on the No. 4j, Carney was able to keep up front despite the heavy track conditions.

“We finished second in the Heat and ended up started third in the Feature and we actually went backwards at the start,” said Carney. “When the caution would come out, I could get pedal again, but I’d only have it for one turn so after that, I was back to just cruising around. We’ve changed everything on the brakes except the lines, so that’s the next thing to change. If that doesn’t work, we’re attaching an anchor."

Swapping cars for Saturday, the team made the drive to the Lawton Speedway with the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products.

Starting sixth in the final Heat Race, Carney nearly saw his night end as cars in front of him tangled; collecting him in the process.

“The crash bent the left front Radius Rod back and poked a hole in the tire. I was going to try and run it, but they were idling around so slow, I couldn’t keep the car going straight so I opted to just pull off os that relegated us to the B-Main.”

Gridding the field 10th in the last chance race, Carney charged to the runner-up spot.

“We freed the car up and it felt great. I caught the guy in front of me, Walker I think, and if it had been for the win the feature, I would have chanced a maneuver, but we were in a transfer spot so I let it be,” said Carney.

“In the A-Main, we ran from 16th to seventh. We had a great start and really a good run, but he troubling part was I could get someone lined up to pass, but didn’t have enough power for that last 10 feet to get by them. We’re still on the back-up engine, and this one was rebuilt three years ago so it just doesn’t quite have enough at the end of the straightaway. By the time I get enough gear in it to come off the corner, well then I’ve got it gear bound.”

With another solid weekend in the books, the John James Racing/MVT No. 4j team is watching the weather to decide on where they should race this coming weekend.
