Brian Brown – A Change of Scenery!

(Bill W) November 19, 2014 – It has been some time since Brian Brown has jumped in someone else’s equipment, but that was the case last weekend. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver piloted Shawn Petersen’s Print Place #4x at the Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona. Though the car was moving forward all weekend, a win escaped the team.

This was the season finale for ASCS and it’s always competitive in Yuma.

ASCS and that race always has a tough group of cars, and this year was as tough as ever. You’ve got to be on your game. First and foremost, (crew chief) Kenny Woodruff, Josh and Richard did a really good job of getting me comfortable. They definitely did their job with that.

On Friday, you started seventh in your heat and managed a sixth place finish.

That definitely put us behind the 8-ball, but we worked on the car and got it better. We were able to drive from eighth to third in the B. We were actually up beside Sam (Hafertepe) at one time for the lead. That had us looking forward to the A.

You were starting 21st, but it didn’t take you long to get through most of the field.

We were able to get up to 12th or 13th in the first six or eight laps. I felt at that point, we had a shot at even getting a top five. We kind of stalled there a little bit though. I wasn’t as good late in the race as I needed to be and we ended up tenth. I thought it was really a respectable first night for us.

In Saturday’s finale, your draw went better and you started third in your heat.

We had Jeff Swindell and Blake Hahn on the front row, so we knew it was going to be tough. We were able to get second to Jeff there. Even though our times were similar to his, I didn’t feel we were going to be good enough to go from 13th to win. That’s what we went there for.

So, I assume you made some changes for the feature?

Kenny and I talked, and we went a little different direction than what I normally do, and what he normally does. The result was, we were just way too tight in the feature. We ended up 11th.

How would you sum up the weekend?

I’m just very thankful for Shawn Petersen and the Print Place team to give us the opportunity and such good equipment. I’m thankful that they let me put FVP and Casey’s General Stores on the car as well. They had a new Maxim that was working well too. Hopefully, we can drive for them again. Overall, we had a good time and it was a good change of scenery for me.
