Shilling Wins First Race; Agan Wins First Title!

It was a historical night Saturday at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. Emerging victorious in both the 25-lap feature and the 10-lap Ironman Challenge was Tony Shilling. The two wins, including his first feature win, paid the Knoxville, Iowa native $2,000. Another Knoxville native won the war. Jon Agan picked up the 2014 Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders championship, his first title.

Agan, who won both his heat and the Shake-up Dash shot out to an early lead in the main event after a tangle between Austin Johnson and Knoxville champ, Joe Beaver, slowed the initial try. With nine laps completed, Mike Houseman Jr. flipped hard in turn three, and was struck mid-air by Beaver. Fortunately, both drivers were uninjured.

Agan led the field back to green, ahead of Shilling, Russ Hall, Jesse Giannetto and Robbie Standridge. Josh Schneiderman shot to fifth on the restart, as Shilling chased Agan, pulling to his nerf bar in traffic. With fourteen laps in the books, Keoni Texeira came to a stop in turn three, bringing the final caution.

Under yellow, Agan would retire with a flat right rear, handing the lead to Shilling. Hall was second, ahead of Giannetto, Schneiderman and Standridge. Standridge would jump the start and be penalized a spot at the end of the race.

While Shilling pulled away from the field the final eleven laps with Hall in tow, Schneiderman and Giannetto battled for third. After a torrid duel, Schneiderman would grab the show position. Dustin Selvage, who started 14th was fifth. Hard-charger, Paul Nienhiser, Standridge, Jordan Goldesberry, Donnie Steward and Nate Van Haaften rounded out the top ten.

Beaver, Hall and Shilling joined Agan as heat winners. John Schulz won the B. In the B main, Andy Krieger broke a front end and limped into turn one. CJ Houseman, who was running second, had nowhere to go and jumped the left front of Krieger’s car and flipped. He was unhurt.

“We put new tires on the car, and I think we may have had something for (Agan),” said Shilling in Victory Lane with his $1,500 paycheck. “It worked out good either way. The motor stumbled a little bit the last two laps, so that made me nervous. It feels good to get a win. This is a good series.”

The “Ironman Challenge” was also dominated by Shilling, who led the ten lap distance. After receiving a starting spot on the tail from Agan in a revenge draw, Schneiderman stormed to second. Bret Tripplett was third, ahead of Schulz and Agan. The race paid $500 to win, and drivers and owners with 100% participation in the series were eligible.
