Greg Walters Wins At SSP; Continues Doug Walters Classic Streak

One of the crown jewels of the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series took place last Saturday, August 2nd, at Sunset Speedway Park, the Doug Walters Classic. It would mark the eleventh race of the campaign and the sixth visit to the “Banks Bullring”. The race is ran in honor of former SSP promoter Doug Walters who was a big supporter of racing in the Pacific Northwest.
In a caution filled main event Greg Walters, Doug’s son, would take the lead on lap thirty-six of the sixty-seven lap feature. Once Walters, hailing from Banks, got to the front he would dominate the rest of the distance. Walters would pick up the win in his T&G Trucking/American Landscaping/Duncan Automotive/Schram Brothers Excavating #97 Victory Circle to mark his eighth win with the series in 2014. The win was also his sixth straight Doug Walters Classic triumph keeping his perfect record intact as the winner of every race ran in honor of his father.
The Reser's Fine Foods/Wayne Martin Floor Covering/Competitive Edge Sign & Design #99 MasterSbilt of Brad Martin out of Warren was the runner-up while Dave Walters of Gresham in his All-In Property Investments/X-Factor Race Cars/Warpaint Motorsports Graphix #67 MasterSbilt was third. The rest of the top five would be made up of the Schram Brothers Excavating/Duncan Automotive #51 MasterSbilt entry of Banks native Robert Duncan in fourth and fellow Banks driver Rob Ireland in fifth driving his Ireland and Ireland at Law/Privateer Racing/Klecker Knives and Tools/Applebee Aviation #8 machine.
Greg Walters would set fast time of the night and win the trophy dash. Rob Ireland and Walters were heat race winners. With the main event win Walters would score yet another clean sweep of the evening’s events.
The Northwest Extreme Late Model Series will return to Sunset Speedway Park on Saturday August 23rd for their final appearance of 2014 at the ¼-mile clay oval. For the latest news and info regarding NELMS visit latemodel.nwextremeseries.com.
